Description

T. M. ROYAL.
TOBACCO PACKAGE.
APPLICATION mum JULY 7, 1914.

THOMAS M. ROYAL, OF BBYN MAWR, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOBACCO-PACKAGE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, T1-1oMAs M. RoYAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bryn Mawr, county of Montgomery, State foil at one end thereof sealed by the internal revenue stamp while the foil at the other end thereof has been simply folded inwardly in an unsealed condition, the result of which is that the package is liable to open at such end with consequent waste of tobacco.
My present invention consists of a novel package which is constructed in such a manner that one end can be maintained in a sealed condition at all times. t
It further consists of a novel package wherein an inner lining, an intermediate layer of foil and a label is employed, the parts being constructed in such a manner that the label can be secured to the lining at one end of the package.
It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawing one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view partly broken away, of a package, embody" ing my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of one end thereof in a partly folded condition. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the other end thereof as sealed by the internal revenue stamp. Fig. 1 represents a perspective view of the package with both ends sealeda Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawing :1 designates a package embodying my invention, the same consisting of an inner layer or sheet of material 2 such as for example paper, cardboard or other desired material.
Specification of Letters Patent.

3 designates an intermediate layer of foil, and 4t designates the outer label which is ordinarily madeof paper having any desired advertising or other matter printed or inipressed thereon. The label at one end of the package terminates, as at 5, and the foil 3 and lining 2 extend beyond such label so that they may have the side portions folded inwardly, as at (3, and their upper and lower end portions folded inwardly, as at 7. The parts are retained intheir folded condition by means of the internal revenue stamp 8 which is supplied with adhesive in order that it will adhere to the label 4.- and one or both of the flaps 7 of the foil. The opposite end of the package is formed in a novel manner, it being seen that the label 41 at such end is extended, as at 9, so that the lining 2, foil 3 and label terminate at substantially the same place. The side portions or flaps are then folded inwardly, as at 10, and the top and bottom portions or flaps 11 are folded inwardly thereover and sealed in position in any desired manner. I have shown, in the present instance one manner of securing the parts in position by providing one of the portions or flaps 11 with adhesive 12 which will adhere to the outer flap or portion 11 which is a part of the label 4, it being, understood that it is within the scope of my invention to employ a staple or other fastening device to secure the end flaps in position.
I preferably form a tab by extending either the lining 2, as at 13, or the label 4, as at 14, it being understood that it is within the scope of my invention to form the tab by an extension of either the lining or label or both. The tab is adapted to extend over the side of the package and be secured thereto by any desired fastening means such as, for example, the adhesive 12.
It has been found impracticable in practice to paste foil to foil so that in packages secures the lining at one end to a portion of the label at such end thereby sealing one end of the package and preventing any loss of tobacco through such end.
The lining and foil are of substantially the same length While the label is of less length than the foil so that it is folded in at one end only of the package.
It Will now be apparent that I have devised a new and useful construction of a tobacco package Which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and While I have, in the present instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof Which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars Without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A tobacco package, comprising an inner lining, a sheet of foil of substantially the same length as said lining, and a label of less length than the length of said lining and foil, said lining, foil and label at one end thereof terminating at substantially the same place, whereby when the end portions are folded the flaps formed thereby bring a portion of the lining against the label, and means to secure the said flaps in position to close one end of the package.
2. A tobacco package, comprising an inner lining, a foil covering said lining, and a label covering said foil except at one end thereof, the foil and lining at one end being inwardly folded and sealed by the internal revenue stamp, the lining, foil and label of the opposite end being inwardly folded to form flaps covering such end of the package, and means carried by the lining portion of a flap to secure the same With respect to the label portion of another flap.
