Be it known that I, JOHN F. FORSYTH, of Bloomington, in the county of Monroe and State of lndiana,have invented a new and useful Improvement in Envelopes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improved reinforce or attachment for envelopes for the purpose of securing money or other valuable commodity therein, and also for facilitating opening of the same.

The reinforce or attachment is constructed and applied to the back of an envelope proper, as hereinafter described, and shown in aecompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a plan View of the back of my improved envelope, the sealingflap being open. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the blank from which the envelope is made, the same having a string attached for a purpose hereinafter described. Figs. 5 and e are perspective views of the reinforce or attachment proper, Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the envelope. enlarged, and showing the same inclosing a package of value. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the back of an envelope of modified construction. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the same when open. Fig. 8 is an edge view of the modified form of reinforce, Fig. 9 is a plan view of such reinforce.

I will first describe the envelope shown in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive. The body or main portion A of the envelope is constructed in the usual manner with a sealing-flap a. and side flaps b, Fig. 2, which flaps constitute the back proper of the envelope.

My invention is embodied in the reinforce B, (shown detached or separate in Figs. 3 and 4,) and which constitutes the central and main portion of the back of the envelope, being an extension of the body of the latter. Said attachment or reinforce B consists of two irregular parts 1 and 1', each h'aving approximately the form of an anvil. Said parts l and 1 are two thicknesses or layers of paper, which are integrally connected. In other Words, the reinforce B is formed of two like parts 1 l', formed of a single piece folded transversely at the middle. When the blank (shown in the dat in Fig. 2) is folded, the part 1 is folded or turned up, and the gummed sides h b of the envelope proper are then folded and sealedl down upon the part 1'. Next the part 1 is turned down and sealed upon the tiapsb band on the base portion of part 1, as shown in Fig. 1.

The outer part 1 has a transverse slot 2 at its middle, and the innerpart l has a tongue 8, which is adapted to project th rough said slot, as shown. rl"his portion 3 serves as a pull-piece for use in opening the envelopethat is to say, the free end of the pull-piece 3 projects on the outer side or back proper of the envelope, Fig. 1, and is thus always easily accessible. Upon seizing it between the forefinger and thumb and pulling outward the reinforce B will be torn out on the lines 4 e, Fig. 1, which are lines of perforation. Thus access wili be had to the contents of the envelope, which may be easily torn completely open.

There is a small sealing-Hap 5 at the middle of the reinforce B, the same being cut out of the part 1, being thus an integral portion of the latter. This flap 5 is gummed on its under side, so that it may be sealed down to secure a string 6. The latter is secured to the body of the reinforce B, being run through holes in part l', as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. Said string 6 serves to tie and thus secure any article, save a package of bank bills, Fig. 5, in the envelope A. For this purpose it is passed and tied around the package fc, and then the ends are tied around the flap 5, which, being next sealed down, as shown in Fig. 1, secures the string most effectually. Thus the package is secured to the reinforce and the ends of the securing device also sealed thereto.

The modified form A of the envelope shown in Figs. 6, 7, and 8 is constructed as follows, the package-string before described being dispensed with: An envelope A of the ordinary construction having iiaps a', h', and 9 is provided with an attachment in the nature of a reinforce B. The body or main portion 7 of this reinforce is anvil-shaped and provided with an extension or elongated tongue 7.

This tongue is inserted through a slot in they IOO the side aps b b', and then the body 7 of the reinforce B is folded and sealed over the back of the envelope, as shown in Fig. 6, to Wit, over the iiaps a b b', and the tongue 7. Finally the tiap 9 is folded and sealed upon the body 7 of the reinforce B and upon the end aps b b. A

It will be seen the free end of the tongue 7 projects from the upper edge of the envelope A, so that it is accessible and may be readily seized for the purpose of tearing open the envelope.

1. The combination With an envelope proper, having a slot in its back or flap side, of a reinforce for the latter Which is applied and secured to the same, and provided with a tongue that projects through said slot and is thus accessible on the outer side of the en-v velope, and serves as a pull-piece, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination with an envelope proper, having a slot in its back,of a reinforce consisting of two parts, which are applied respectively on the inner and outer sides of the back of the envelope, the outer part hav ing a slot and a row of perforations on its sides, and the inner part having a tongue that projects through the slots, and thus serves as a pull-piece, as shown and described.

3. The combination with an envelope proper, of a reinforce, composed of a thin sheetl of iexible material secured to the inner side of the back of the envelope and a package string secured to such reinforce, substantiallyT as shown and described.

4. The combination with an envelope proper, and a reinforce composed of a thin sheet of iexible material secured to the back of the envelope and having a sealing flap at its upper end, of a package string permanently connected with said envelope interi orly, and having free ends of such length as adapt them to be laid under said sealing fiap, for securing them as shown and described.

5. The combination With an envelope proper, and a reinforce of thin flexible niaterial, applied to the back of the same interiorly and cxteriorly, said reinforce having a tongue that projectson the back of the envelope, of a package string which is secured to said reinforce on the inner side, all as shown and described r,whereby upon pulling said tongue outward the envelope will be ruptured and the reinforce and package string detached therefrom as specified.
