EXTENSION-TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented oct. 20, 1914.
Application filed August 5, 1912. Serial No. 713,362.
' citizen of the United States, residing at Butte,'county of Silverbow, State of Montana, one of the United States of America, have invented a new and useful Extension- Table, of which-the following is a speolfication. i
The invention relates more particularly to end extension tables of the type wherein the extension units constitute a permanent partfof the table structure so as to obviate handling and storing of the same The chief objection to such tables and WlllCh has precluded them from going into general use is due to the failure to provide a compact rigid structure owing to the necessarily loose arrangement of the parts which causes the end leaves to sag and become unreliable as supports and to present an unsightly appearance. In thepresent invention I over: come this objection and provide a simple, comparatively inexpensive, and practical extension table.
The nature, characteristic features, and scope of the invention will more readily be understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein,
Figure 1, is an underside perspective view of an endextension table embodying features of my invention; and Fig. 2, is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same.
The frame may be of any desired form; that shown comprising side and end rails 1, and 2, and legs 3. There is a central transverse block or strip 4, rigidly secured to the side rails, and it has a slot or well 5, for the reception of a cross-bar or center board 6, that serves to support the top 7, and it will be understood that the bar 6, has some freedom of play in its complemental slot so as to aiford a limited vertical movement to the top 7, when the end leaves are to be adjusted.
The extension units or end leaves 8, are each equipped with a pair of parallel longitudinally ranging rails 9. The latter are accommodated in ways or slots 10, in the frame members 2, and in slots or ways 11, 1n the cross-bar 6. Means are providedfor insuring the easy and ready entrance of the the cleats or guides 12, shown secured to the transverse strip or block 4. That portion of the rails 9, immediately below the end leaves is beveled outwardly as shown at 13. This facilitates the sliding of the rails and also fails into the slots or ways 11, for example,
permits the top 7, to drop to its normal position when the end leaves are finally in or out. There is also an offset on each rail, as shown at 14, which bears against the frame member 2, and constitutes a. stop to preclude further traverse of the leaf rail The extreme ends of rails 9, have additional offsets 15, which when the leaves are extended bear against the central strip 4, and hold the leaves rigid and in perfect alinement with able frame, a main top portion detachable in respect thereof, a transverse strip secured centrally of the frame and havin a slot, end extension leaves and their comp emental rails, and a bar depending from said top portion and passing through said slot and provided with openings in which the rails are received in pairs.
2. An extension table comprising a suitable frame having slotted end members and a slotted transverse strip or brace, a removable main top portion having a depending bar which extends through the brace and is provided with slots alined with those of the end members, end extension leaves, rails carrying said leaves and movable in the end slots and in the slots of the depending bar and provided with corresponding offsets to said strip contiguous the slots of the bar and serving to guide the rails into said slots. In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
