J. S. LUEDTKE.
MATCH SAFE.
APPLIOATION FILED MAR. 6, I914. I 1,114, 1 59. Patented Oct. 20, 1914 FIG. 2.
FIG. I.
WITNESSES! UNITED STATES [PATENT OFFICE. y
JOHN s. nnnnrxnorwvxorr, MINNESOTA.
M ag a;
Application filed March 6,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN S. LUEDTKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVykofi, in the county of Fillmore and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Match-Safe, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved match safe provided with means for delivering matches therefrom one at a time and consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described andclaimed.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved match safe. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same and Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line A-Ain Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, .1 is the front wall, 2 the side walls and. 3 the rear wall of a downwardly reduced or wedge-shaped box having an upward projection of its rear wall with a hole 4 therein adapted to go upon a nail or other peg in a wall on which the box maybe suspended.
Extending horizontally through a narrow space between the lower ends of the front and rear wall and journaled in the side walls, is a rock-shaft 5, provided at one end with a crank 6. On said shaft are fixedtwo nearly semi-circular guards or cams 7, each of which is formed with a notch 8 and in front thereof with a segmentally curved radial arm 9.
The front wall of the box is provided with notches 10 for the arms 9 to swing into except as to their ends which are too long to pass into the notches. The rear wall is pro vided with shallower notches 12 serving as clearings for the cams 7.
In the operation of the device, when matches 11 are placed in the box, as shown in Fig. 3, and the crank 6 is turned forwardly, the notches 8 will carry one match forward beyond the lower end of the front wall, where the operator can catch it as it rolls down along the then lowered curved arms 9 (see dotted lines 9 in Fig. 3). During this part of the operation the curves of the cams support the supply of matches and Specification of Letters mat.
prevent accidental escape of any part there- Patented 0015204914. 1914. :SerialNo.822,857.
of; when the crank is returned to the normal position the arms 9exert a lifting, stirring and pressing action on the lower part of the supply of matches, whereby the lowest matches are brought to exact parallel position to the rear wall and thereby caused to drop only one match at a time downward into the notches 8 the moment the supply is released from said rearward pressure by starting the crank and the arms 9 in the forward direction again. It' will thus be seen that by using only two resting points, namely in the notches 8 for the match to be delivered, andthe curved arms to press said match against the rear wall of the box and crowdthe adjacent matches upward, I obviate the usual trouble in matclrdelivering safes, that the matches will cross each other or be slightly crooked and thereby tangle and clog the delivering mechanism.
hat is claimed is i 1. A match safe comprising a downwardly reduced or wedge-shaped box adapted to be suspended and having in its lower end a narrow slot between the ends of the front and 1 the rear walls, said lower edge of the front wall having two deep notches, a shaft journaled'in the side walls of thebox and extending along the slot and having at one end a crank, two half-moon shaped'cams fixed on the shaft onefin line with each notch in the front wall; said camshaving each an arm arranged to swingin one of the notches p and curved rearwardly intermediate lts ends so as to almost reach the rear wall of the box without getting its free end into the. notch, said cams having alsoeach a matchcarrying notch close by the rear side of each radial arm.
2. A match safe comprising a downwardly reduced or wedge-shaped box adapted to be suspended and having in its lower end a narrow slot between the ends of the front and the rear walls,.said lower edge ofthe front wall having two deep notches, a shaft journaled in the side walls of the box and ex' tending along the slot and having at one end a crank, twohalf-moon shaped c'ands fixed on the shaft one in line with each notch in the front wall; saidcams having each an arm arranged to swing in one of the notches and curved rearwardly intermediate In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, is eknds so ais to almost reach the rear Wall of in presence of two Witnesses.
