GARMENT.
Specication o. Letters Patent.
Patented sept. 29, 1914.
Application led October 15. 1913. Serial No. 795,179.
To all who/ait may Concern;
Be it known that l, FRANK L. Snrrni, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Dayton, in the coiinty of Montgomery and State of' Ohio, have invented a new and useful Garment. ot' which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to iinionsuits, although it is applicable to drawers. l
Garments embodying the improvement have seats formed by overlapping flaps adapted to be separated to form an opening;r in the seat, and one of the objects ot my invention is to rovide eiiee'tive fastenings with which to old the flaps' in their overlapping position.
Another object is to phiovide the flaps with inelastic margins, and locate'the fastenings iiisuch position with reference to these margins, that they contribute toward the support of the crotch portions of the garment.
The principal object, however, is to provide means whereby the wearer can. without having to reach for the flaps, and Without the tumbling usually incident to tind-v ing the flaps of such garments, retrieve and draw the flaps into their overlapping posi- .tion and at the same time, with the same movements, bring to hand the part of each 1 flap which is to be fastened. The means by which this principal object is accomplished accomplishes another object; namely, the freeedges of the flaps are thereby supported to a .considerable extent Whenthey are separated; to a siiflicient extent at least to proiectiiheiiiW tromY beaming Soilef Another object is lto enable fhg wearer to manipulate the underneath flap from the outside; z'. e., Without having to reach into the garment.
ln'the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view `of a garment embodying my invention,-with the flaps closed and fastened. Fig. 2 shows the garmentwith the flaps partly separated. Fig. 3 shows the flaps substantially in normal position, but not yet fastened; Fig. 4 is a front view of the garment; Fig. 5, shows a modified arrange ment for fastening the aps, and Figo' is .a modification of the retrieving strap.
The garmentillustrated is in most respects like `an ordinary union suit, the seat of which is formed of fiaps 10 and 11. The
tree edges of the flaps are provided with extensions 1Q and 13., respectively, which are adapted to be fastened to the waist of the garment by buttons 14. The extension 13 passes thro-ugh a slit 15. enabling it to be fastened on the outside of the garment. A strip 16. which will hereinafter be referred to as a "retrieving strap or retriever, is fastened to each of the extensions, and to 'the waist of the garment; the latter fasteny ings being in such positions that the reti-ievers are under the extensions when they are buttoned to the garment, as in Fig. 1.
Reference to Fig'. Q makes'qiiite clear that,"v the wearer may, Without reaching farther around than the hips, take hold of the retrievinpY vstraps and draw the flaps into position, at the same time drawing the ends of the extensions into hand so th can' be biittoned. In case the flaps are made of flimsy or elastic material the edges 17 may be bound, or in some other manner made inelastic. and when so finished the crotch portions ot' the by the flaps.
ln Fig. 5 the extensions are provided respectively with a button and' onhole, with which they are fastened tog ther at the front Without their beiiigir fastened to the garment.
to the `garmentby retrievers. the retriever is fastened to the garment by more buttonholes,-the garment is thereby `made adjustable to fit the wearer.
fn this, as in the form alreadv described, the extensionsare attache In Fig# 6,
There are other ways besides those shown for embodyingl the subject matter of the appended claims, and I do not mean to limit the adaptation of my invention to the par ticular form of garment shown.
, Wvha't l claim is as follows:
1. A laiai'nient having a pair of overlapping: flaps coveringT an opening in the garment, detachable means Jtor securing the Yfree ends of the aps to the garment to hold them in overlapping position, and retrieving straps att-ached to said free ends and to the Lsiarment, the latter attachments' being so located that the retrieving straps are covered by the flaps when they are secured in their overlapping position.
2. A garment having a. pair of overlapping covering an opening in the garment., detachable means 'for securing the tree ends ot the flaps to the garment to hold them in overlapping position, retrieving strapsV attached to said free ends and to 'the Garment and means whereb the cletachahie means for securing the underneath Hap to the cgarment is located on the outside oi the garment.
"3. garment 'having a p air of overlapW -ninglflaps covering an opening in the garment, extensions attached to the free ends of the iaps, a slit in the garment ythrough ses, detachable means for securing the ensions to theA garment to hold the flaps overlapping position, and retrieving Vaps attachedto 'the extensions and to the ment.
ing4 it in its proper position under the outer flap.
A. garment having a pair of overlapping; flaps corel-lng an' opening 1n the garxnent,'detachable .means for securing the free ends of the flaps to the garment to hold them in overlapping position, and reich the extension of the underneath flap:
f.-.. i garment haring a pair of overlaptrieving straps secured to said free ends and. io the garment.
(3. garment having: a pair oi overlapping flaps covering an opening in the gar ment, extensions attached to the free ends of the Hans. means for securing;y the extensions to the garment to hold the flaps in overlapping position, and retrieving straps attached to said extensions and to the garment.
7. A garment having n pair of overlapping' flaps covering an openingr in the gar-- nient, extensions attached to the free ends of the flaps, means for securing the` ends of the extensions to each other to hold the flans in overlapping position, and retrievingl straps attached to theI extensions und 1.o the garment.
A garment having' :i seat composed o two overlapping flaps which ma;7 be separated to forni en opening in the garment, detachable means for fastening; the free ends of the flaps to the gnrmentto hold` them in overlapping;f position, saitl means being so located and the liaps so fabricated that the crotch of the `garment is thereby also supported, and retrieving straps attached to said free ends and to the hotly of the garment.
