T 0 all 10. mm it may concern Be it known that I, JULIA C. FLADE, a subject of the King of Denmark, and resident of the city of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Dress-Shields, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to dress shields used in womens garments, and has for its general objects to improve their efficiency and facilitate their ready attachment and detachment ;its special objects, however, being to provide a removable shield which can be easily cleansed in all its parts and surfaces without impairing its durability, but on the contrary to add to the economical life of the material forming the shield proper, by permitting the selection for this purpose of such a single thin flexible substance as need only be sterilized occasionally instead of requiring to be scrubbed or washed and wrung out as at present; and further, to permit of those portions of the complete shield as come in more direct contact with the wearers person (and consequently absorb more or less perspiration) to be made of a single textile fabric capable of being readily detached and subjected to ordinary laundrying at any time, while an interchangeable or duplicate impervious member may immediately be substituted and the shield replaced in the garment.

Certain details of construction and combinations of elements also form parts of the improvements, for full comprehension of which reference must be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification.

In said drawings: Figure 1 represents a face view of the complete improved shield, partly broken away, with a portion of one flap turned back exposing all of the projecting fastening devices. Fig. 2 is a separated view of the internal or water-proof member slightly distorted so as to show both flaps thereof, and also such of the fastening devices as are permanently attached thereto. Fig. 3 is an inside face view of the outer or washable member, distended so as to expose all of its parts and features of construction. Fig. 4 is an exaggerated crosssectional detail taken 011 the line 4, 4, Fig. 1, showing the different folds at their upper junction line.

10 represents the internal or water-proof member made preferably of a single ply of very thin flexible vulcanized rubber, silk, silkoline, or any other suitable material; cut to the proper approved pattern, folded into two flaps 10 10 of equal size. These are preferably provided with a binding 11, around their entire edges, which binding may be of the same material, or of other fabric stitched or otherwise fastened thereto as shown. are suitable short straps 12, 12, projecting from the bound edges and adapted to support small safety- pins 13, 13, and similar supplementary straps and pins 14, 14, are situated at such number of points on the edges of the two flaps 10* as may be necessary to afford proper fastenings to the garment. Any other form of fastening may be adopted as may be preferred, such as laces or the like.

15 represents the outer member of my shield, made up in the form of a slip-cover, or sack, having when folded two flaps 15 of cotton, linen, silk or other preferred washable material. This cover, when spread out as in Fig. 3, presents at its central portion an opening 16 for the insertion and removal of the waterproof member 10. When the cover is folded this opening closes automatically as it then lies at the top curve of the shield at the lower side thereof. There is an extra and smaller flap 17 stitched to the fabric of the cover along this central folding line, or just within it, which supplementary flap is adapted to be folded inward over the inner member 10 and thus help to secure and maintain it in place.

18, 18, are slits in the cover 15 near its edges through which the straps of the fastenings 14, 14 project, such arrangement coacting with the supplementary internal flap 17 to securely hold the water-proof inner member 10, in place when the shield is in use, while allowing ready removal of same since the fastening straps 14 simply slide through the slits 18 when a fresh cover 15 is to be applied.

I do not limit myself to the precise form or to any of the details of construction above set forth, as the same may be varied or moditied to suit different tastes or requirements, and be embodied in any form found suitable I Iatented May 5, 1914. What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows 1. In a detachable dress shield, the combination of an internal member of Waterproof material a plurality of fastening de vices, loops of fabric secured thereto and projecting from the edges of said internal member, and an external enveloping member composed of Washable fabric having double flaps, provided with an opening at its inner central folding line for the passage of the internal member, and also having slits near the edges of said flaps through which said'loops of fabric may be passed, and a supplementary internalflap secured to the fabric at said central folding line.

2. A dress shield, comprising an internal member of Waterproof material having securing loops on its margins, an external inclosing member of substantially the same configuration having slits adapted to register With said loops, metallic looped pins inserted in said securing loops to secure said loops, said external member being provided With a pair of oppositely disposed pockets to receive said internal member, having a common opening at its inner fold and a flap secured to one side of said common opening and closing said opening and extending into the oppositely disposed pocket.
