To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST DvoRAoEK, a subject of the Emperor' of Germany, resid ing at Maynard, in the county of Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail- Joints; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in rail joints and resides in the provision of a simple and effective device that is particularly designed to secure the ends of broken rails temporarily in mines and other places where a great deal of traflic is had and breaking of the rails of the track is frequent.
An important object of my invention is to provide a rail j oint of the character de,- scribed that is so constructed as to supp-ort the rails without necessitating the placing of a tie thereunder, said device being particularly useful when tracks are to be repaired and old rails removed and new ones placed in position, especially in mines where great numbers of cars of ore are carried over the tracks and a delay occasioned through breakage o-r derangement of a rail is` disastrous to the workings of the mines.
My invention contemplates obviatinv all objectionable features above describe so that rails when broken may be securely and reliably joined and supported without requiring much time. j
The above and additional objects are ac-` complished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out as claimed.`
llith reference to the drawings, wherein l have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a 'sideelevation of a rail showing my improved joint device securing the ends of a broken rail in position, Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken through the rail and showing my improved joint applied thereto, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the supporting and rail clamping members of the joint removed from the rail.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the numerals 1 and 2 designate the end portions of abrcken rail and 3 my improved rail j oint'as an entirety. The rail joint consists of a pair of angular lish plates 4 and 5 so Shaped asfto conform to the shape of the web and base portions of the rail ends r1 and2 and of suflicient length to` overlap the ends a considerable distance. A plurality, `preferably four clamping members designated 6 as an entirety are employed to clamp the fish plates L1 and 5 in position so as to securely hold the rail ends 1 and 2 against derangement. These clamping -members 6 are arranged in pairs, al pair being arranged adjacent vthe end of each rail end as clearly shown in Fig. 1 in the drawings. These members 6 also act to support the rails in such manner that the necessity of employing a tie is eliminated. Each of the clamping members consists of a rec `tangular engaging portion 7` that is designed to engage the under face of the rail bases and` is provided at its ends with depending flanges 8 to engage the ground or road bed so that the portion 7 is spaced from the ground or road bed. Laterally extending flanges 9 and 10 are formed on the free or lower edges of the'flanges 8 and act as seats to engage the road bedor ground to provide a bearing surface for theclamping members. The flange 9 is bent back upon itself to provide an overlying portion 11 slightly engaging the upper face of the flange `9 and an upstanding or vertical portion 12 engaging the outer face of the flange adjacent thereto. The upstanding portion 12 is eX- tended upwardly and Vinwardly and .bent from its longitudinal center to provide an approximately V.-shaped rail clamping jaw l'that isdesigned to engage the inner half of the rail bases. The portions 13 are disposed upwardly and inwardly from the inner endsI of the portions 7. A removable clamping jaw 14: similar to the one 13 and provided `with an L-shaped body 15 is mounted upon the flanges 8 and 10 at the outer faces thereof and arranged to coperate with the one 13. The flange 10 is provided with upwardly olfset and spaced arms 16 at its outer end and designed to coperate'with a locking tongue 17 formed integral onthe outer end of the L-shaped body portion 15. This tongue 17 is reduced with relation to the body 1 5 and provided with an enlarged outer end 18 which is offset with relation to said portion of the tongue so that it may be disposed beneath the arms Eef 16 and the body portion 15 on top of the flange 10. A bolt 19 is inserted through the v flange 8 and upstanding portion 12 with its headv engaging the outerk face of the upstanding portion 12 and extended through l the other flange 8 and upstanding port-ion of the L-shaped body portion 15. A nut 20 is turned on the screw threaded terminal of the bolt 19 and serves to hold the clamping member 14 in position. The bolts 19 increase the. rigidity and strength` of the clamping members 6 thus insuring a reliable supporting of the rail ends.
To remove the clamping members 14 it is only necessary to draw the bolt 19 after taklocking action.
In operation when it is desired to secure the broken ends of a rail, and temporarily secure the proper rail end while a new track being laid, it is simply necessary to apply 'preferred embodiment, is the most efiieient and practical; yetvrealizing that the condi-- tions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact-that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of kparts may 'be `resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as set forth.
Vhat is claimed is 1. .A rail joint consistingof angular fish plates, clamping means to clamp the fish plates to the rails consisting of a rectangular rail base supporting and engaging portion, depending flanges formed on the ends of said portion, laterally extending flanges formed on the ends of said depending flanges to rest flat upon the road bed orl ground, a fixed rail clamping aw carried adjacent one end of said rail base engaging and supporting portion, a Aremovable jaw carried at the other end of said rail base supporting and engagingvportion, a locking tongue carried by said removable j aw, arms carried by the laterally extending flanges, one of the laterally extending flangesfto coperate with the Copies of-this patentr maybe obtained for locking tongue to hold the removable jaws against upward movement, and a bolt inserted through the depending flanges and fixed and removable jaws.
2. A rail joint consisting of fish plates to overlie the ends of rails and sides thereof and means to clamp the fish plates to the rails and supports for the rails consisting of a rail base engaging and supporting portion approximately the same width as the base of the rails, depending flanges on the ends of said rail base engaging and supporting portion to support the rail in special relation to the ground or road bed, laterally extending flanges acting as feet formed on the free ends of said depending flanges and to rest flat upon the road bed or ground, and means to clamp the fish plates to the rails carried adjacent to the ends of said rail base engaging and supporting portion.
3. A rail joint consisting of fish plates to overlie the ends of rails and sides thereof and means to clamp the fish plates to the rails and supports for the rails consisting of a rail base engaging and supporting portion approximately the same width as the base of the rails, depending flanges on the ends of said rail base engaging and supporting portion to support the rail in spaced relation to the ground or road bed, laterally extending flanges acting as feet formed on the free ends of said depending flanges and to rest flat upon the road bed or ground, and means to clamp the fish plates to the rails carried adjacent to the ends of said rail base engaging and supporting portion, consisting of a movable clamping jaw, a stationary clamping jaw, a bolt inserted through the depending flanges and jaws, and a nut turned on one end of said bolt.
4. A rail joint consisting of angular fish plates, clamping means to clamp the fish plates to the rails consisting of a rail base supporting and engaging portion, depending flanges formed on the ends of said portions, laterally .extending flanges formed on the ends of said depending flanges, a rail clamping jawcarried adjacent to one end of said rail base engaging and supporting portion, an adjustable jaw carried at the other end of said rail base supporting portion, and a locking tongue carried by said removable jaw and arranged to interlock with the adjacent lateral flange.
