Description

E. SHANTZ.
BUTTON.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 5, 1910.
WITNESSES: INVENTOR ATTORNEYS qzw EDGAR SHANTZ, O13 ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
BUTTON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 15, 1914.
Application filed. December 5, 1910. Serial No. 595,595.
To all whom it ma concern:
Be it known t at I, EDGAR SHANTZ, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Button, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to buttons having fragile heads, and shanks composed of strong material, and has for its object the production of such a button, which is particularly adapted for use with certain standard machines for securing buttons to articles.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing which is the sectional view of the button.
Buttons having heads formed of pearl, vegetable ivory, or like fragile substances, are usually provided with metallic shanks. In the manufacture of such buttons, the shanks have heretofore been secured to the heads by expansion of the metal forming the shanks. To those skilled in the art, it is well known that when button-heads and shanks are united together, as described, a large percentage of the heads is destroyed by breakage, even though slight expanding strain is used, and the shanks are but insecurely fastened to the heads, and frequently become detached therefrom, especially when in use and subjected to strain, thus rendering the buttons objectionable, and tending to decrease the use thereof.
In my Patent N 0. 870,907, issued Nov. 12, 1907, I have disclosed a button having a head of pearl, vegetable ivory, or other fragile material, and a shank, cast within the button-head.
My present button comprises a buttonhead or blank and a shank including a base cast within the button-head and an eye secured to the base. The button-head 1 is formed of pearl, vegetable ivory or other fragile material, and has a socket 2 in its rear face and preferably increasing inwardly in size. The base 3 is cast in the socket 2, and the eye 4 has a portion embedded in the base. Usually said eye consists of a loop having its ends 5 extending into the socket, and the base is cast in the socket about the ends of the loop.
A button constructed as described is provided with an ornamental head and with a strong means of attachment to the article upon which the button is to be used, and is particularly useful as a shoe-button.
What I claim is:
A button having a head of fragile material and a rigid wire eye extending from the rear side of the head, said button comprising a one piece blank of a non-moldable fragile substance provided with an undercut recess opening out through the rear face of the blank, the front face of the blank being imperforate, a wire bent to form a loop and having its ends extending into the recess and moldable material cast in said recess through the opening in the rear face of the blank, and extending about the ends of the wire and filling the recess, whereby the ends of the loop are rigidly connected to the fragile blank, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Rochester, in the county of Monroe, in the State of New York, this 28th day of November, 1910.
