LINFORD J'. DAVIS, OF BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE REYES-DAVIS COMPANY, INC., 01 BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN.
; REcErrAcLE surronr AND oovnn OPERATING AND LOCKING Milan's.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 26, 1916.
. To all ichom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LINroRD J. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacle Supports and Cover Operating and Locking Means, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in receptacle supports and cover operating and locking means.
My improvements are especially designed by me for use as garbage or waste can or receptacle holders and I have illustrated the same in the accompanying drawings as I have embodied them for use for such purpose.
My improvements may, however, be readily embodied in structures designed for other purposes.
The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide an improved receptacle holder and cover operating and locking: means. Second, to provide an improved re ceptacle holder and cover operating and locking means adapted to lock the cover on the receptacle when the cover is closed, which is simple in structure and one which is easy to operate and not likely to get out of repair.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly claims A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forminga part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a side view of a structurenem bcdymg the featuresof my invention, the cover and cover actuating mechanism beingshown inits raised position by dotted. lines.-
.Fig. II is an enlarged detail vertical section throughthe receptacle body and the cover. Fi III is a detail horizontal sec-,
.tion on a hne corresponding toline 33 of Figs. I and IV, thereceptaclebeingremoved.
Fig. IV is aidetail-vertical section on a line corresponding to line 4-4 of Figs. I and III. Fig. Vis a detail elevation showing the connections'for the c'overand actuating levers. Fig. VI is a detail side elevation of defined and pointed out in the acters refer to similar parts throughout the several vlews, and the sectional views aretaken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawings, the recep tacle support in the structure illustrated comprises a pair of crossed base members 1 and 2, the ends of the base member 1 being extended into uprights 3, while the base member 2 is provided with upturned ends 4. The support or rest 5 is secured by screws or rivets 6 to these upturned ends Land to the uprights 3. The base members are connected by a central rivet 7. The receptacle 8 rests on the receptacle support 5. The uprights 3* extend up at. each side of the receptacle, their upper ends being bent rearwardly as shown in Fig. I. The cover 9 is mounted on arms or levers 10 pivoted at 11 on the upper ends of the uprights. The levers 10 are pivotally connected to the cover at 12, so that when the leversare tilted on their pivots the cover is swung upward and backward, the cover tilting on the edge of the receptacle with a 1 sliding and rocking movement. The actuating lever 13 is pivoted to the uprights at 14. The lever 13 is bail-shaped and proerallyto form the pivots 17 arranged through the levers and retained by cotter pins 18. The arms of the actuating lever are provided with. stops 19 which engage with the links when the cover is inits closed position, while the, cover levers 10 are provided with'stops 20 which engage the links when the cover is, in its open position. The stops 19 are so-disposed as topermit the pivots connecting the links tothe actuating lever arms ,the pivots to swing past'a plane through V for the actuating lever and the plvots connecting the links to the cover ing position. v
In the modified form shown in Figs. VI and VII the links 22 are formed of sheet metal folded to embrace the cover and actuating levers, the pivots 23 being formed of cotter pins. The fold in the links engaging the edge of the actuating lever constitutes the stop and the cover lever also swings in engagement with the fold of the link constituting a stop therefor.
With the parts thus arranged, as I have illustrated, the structure is simple and economical to produce and very easy.to operate and an effective lock is provided without the necessity of catches or the like.
5 With the cover in its raised position the receptacle can be conveniently lifted. from the support and a clean receptacle placed thereon. The cover is securely retained so that it cannot be opened by dogs and will not accidentally open in the event of thej'structure being tipped over.
, I have illustrated and described my improvements in detail in the fonm in which I have embodied the same. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe various modifications which I contemplate as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled inthe art to embody or adapt the same as may be deemed desirable.
Having thus described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure Letters Patent, is: 1. In a structure of the class described, the combination with a receptacle and .a
cover therefor, of a receptacle support, up-
rights disposed at the sides of the receptacle and projecting rearwardly at their upper ends, cover levers pivotally mounted on said-uprights, the front ends of the levers being pivotally secured to the cover so that the cover is tilted on the rear edge of the receptacle when the levers are actuated to open the cover, a bail-shaped actuating lever pivotally mounted on said uprights,
said actuating lever being provided with upwardly projecting arms, links connectmg said actuating lever arms to the rear ends of said cover levers, the pivots *connecting said links to said actuating lever arms being arranged to swing past a plane throughthe actuating lever pivots and the ivots connecting said links to said cover evers thereby providing a lock for said cover, said actuating lever arms being provided with stops engaging said links when in looking position, said cover levers being provided with stops engaging said links when in open position, and a return spring for said actuating lever connected thereto and to said uprights.
