Description
B. MAYHER. ADJUSTABLE BENCH AND PEDAL ATTACHMENT FOR PIANOS.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 29,1915- Patented Sept. 19, 1916.
- T 1 I .IIIIIIIIIIIIII BEULAH MAYHER, OF GLENWOOD, ARKANSAS.
ADJUSTABLE BENCH AND PEDAL ATTACHMENT FOR PIANOS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 19, 1916.
Application filed June 29, 1915. Serial No. 36,929.
citizen of the United States, residing at Glenwood, in the county of Pike and State of Arkansas, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Bench and Pedal Attachments for Pianos, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to adjustable bench and pedal attachments for pianos.
The object of my invention is to provide a piano bench that is but little different in appearance from the conventional piano bench, but embodying adjustment features whereby the seat may be quickly raised or lowered to any desired position, so that a child may be in proper position before the instrument.
My device also embodies an adjustable pedal attachment which may be withdrawn from beneath the bench, with which it is slidably engaged, so that the pedal depressors will contact with the pedals of a piano. With my device a child may sit at a piano as comfortably as a person of mature years, thereby lessening the strain put upon children by requiring long practice in an uncomfortable position.
Other objects of this invention not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the detailed description and drawings forming a part of this specification.
Furthermore, this invention consists in the novel arrangements and combination of parts more particularly described in the following specification and embodied in the claim appended hereunto and forming a part of this application.
Referring now to the drawings, which are merely illustrative of my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device illustrating its operative position with respect to a piano. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of my adjustable bench and pedal attachment. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the pawl and ratchet construction for raising and lowering the seat of the bench.
Referring further to the drawings, wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout the respective views, 1 designates the sides of my bench, having a false top 2 mounted upon the upper ends thereof. Said top is formed with an elongated slot 3 near both ends thereof and adj acent' the inner face of said sides 1. A seat 4: is mounted upon the upper ends of supports 5 vertically mounted within said slots 3. The said supports and seat are vertically adjustable by means of ratchets 6 secured upon both supports and adopted to be engaged by pawls 7. The pawls are disengaged from the ratchets by oppositely disposed levers 8 secured at their ends to said pawls and at the other ends terminating in handles 9, said handles being located at a point centrally of said false top. Said levers are slidably mounted adjacent the under side of said top by means of a. plurality of brackets 10.
A frame is provided, having sides 11 vertically depending from the under side of the false top 2 and extending to a point near the lower end of the sides 1. A bottom 12 is secured to the lower ends of said sides 11, said bottom being provided with a groove track 13 upon the upper face thereof.
A pedal attachment 14 comprising a casing substantially of the same length as the width of said bench, is provided with a tongue 15 upon both sides near the bottom thereof, said tongues being adapted to slidably engage with said groove track 13 whereby said casing may be pushed entirely beneath the bench. A plurality of rollers 16 mounted on the underside of said casing are adapted to support the end thereof when pulled outwardly with respect to said bench. A plurality of piano pedal depressors 17, having heads 18 formed upon the upper ends thereof and slightly curved pedal treads 19 formed upon the lower ends thereof, are mounted in a substantially upright position through said casing near the forward end thereof. A spring member 20 is mounted around each of said depressors adapted to return the same to inoperative position when pressure is removed from the head thereof.
From the construction described, it is obvious that when the seat of the bench is raised and the levers 8 are separated the pawls will automatically engage the ratchets and retain the false top in raised position; also that the compression of the levers 8 will release the pawls so that the seat may and pedal attachments for pianos being obvious, it is unnecessary to further enlarge upon the same herein.
Havin now described and pointed out the new and useful features of my invention, I do not limit myself to the shape of certain parts where the shape is not essential, nor do I restrict myself to the exact details of construction shown and described, but mean and intend to claim all equivalents and variations thereof not departing in principle from my invention, and falling wlthin the purview of the appended claim.
WVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A bench of the class described, including a main supporting frame, depending supporting sides carried thereby and having inwardly directed arms, a casing slidable on said arms, a plurality of inclined plunger arms carried by said casing, said arms being maintained in upward position by means of springs, the lower free ends of the arms being adapted to engage piano pedals or the like, and the upper ends being provided with foot engaging portions.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature hereto.
BEULAH MAYHER.
