Description
G. W. BEEBE.
TOOTH BRUSH.
APPLICATION FELED NOV. 5. 15H3.
M n ywfwf GAYLORD W. HEERE, OF CLYTON, GEORGIA.
'rooien-annee.
Specification of Letters lPatent.
Patented Sept. 5, Hilti.
pgication lec Novembenll. Serial No. 799,295.
. of Clayton, llabun county, Georgia, have invented certain new and useful improvements -in 'lootl'l-lirushes, of which the following is a specification.
`ln tooth brushes, as usually" constructed, the bristles are mounted in an extension of the handle forming the back of the brush and in using, become unevenly worn, those at the outer end or toe of the lbrush usually wearing away faster than the bristles at the heel of the brush, and this uneven wearingv of the bristles causes an unequal pressure on the teeth and imperfect brushing thereof. lt is frequently necessary therefore, to throw away'a brush which may be, considerably worn at one point and in perfect condition for use at other 'points lt also sometimes happens that some of the bristles will work loose in the head, necessitating the throwing away of the entire brush.
`The objecto'f my invention is to provide a tooth brush handle having a detachable or removable brush head, which can he removed, and a new head substituted therefor when desired.
A further object is to provide a brush head that is capable of reversal on the handle to permit uniform wear of the bristles' from end to end of the brush.
My invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
ln the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l is a side view of a tooth brush embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the head portion of the brush, Fig. 3 is a transverse, sectional view on the line w-a.' of Fig. l, Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the brush head, illus'- trating a modied construction, Fig. l5 is a transverse, sectional view on the line g/-g/ of Fig. 4, Fig. 6 is a detail, sectional view of the brush head showing vanother modification, Fig. l is a plan view of the same,
'Fig 8 is a transierse, sectional View on the line e-z of Fig. 7, Fig. 9 is a side View of the brush head, illustrating still another modification, Fig. l0 is a sectional View on the line 1li-#w of Fig. 9, Fig. ll is a detail sectional view illustrating another modifica tion in theheadof the brush.
ln the drawing, 2 represents they handle of the brush. This may be of any suitable material adapted for the purpose. ,At one` end of the handle the longitudinal edges thereof are bent downwardly and inwardly, forming flanges 3, between which is a recess l that is adapted to receive the brush back in which the bristles 6 are mounted in any suitable way. A spring clip 7 is pivoted .at 8 on the handle and has an end portion 9 that is adapted to engagethe outer end oi the brush hack 5 and lock it in the recess. This clip may be swung to one side to allow the brush back 5 to be withdrawn from the flanges 3 and turned end for end therein, so that when the bristles at one end of the brush become worn, the head may be reversed and the life of the brush thereby considerably prolonged. Furthermore, when the bristles become loose or vworn out, a new head may he substituted for the old one and a new brush thereby obtained without the necessity of throwing away the handle and purchasing an entirely new brush, as usually is necessary in devices of this kind. instead of providing the clip 7 on the handle, l may make the end of the handle convex, as indi cated at l0 in Fig. 5, and provide inwardlycurved, flanged edges ll thereon, which. when separated by pressure on the curved portion, will allow the insertion of the brush head between them and will grip the edges of the brush head when released and hold it securely in the handle without the necessity of any other fastening means.
In Figs. 6, 7 and 8 l have shown another modification. which consists in providing a brush head l2 having notches 13 in the ends thereof to receive bosses la pressed or punched from the end portion of the handle and attached to said end portion by means of a centrally arranged pivot pin 15. This pivot pin is preferably in the form of a screw that is tapped at one end into the back of the brush l2 and has a bearing on the handle This screw may be readily removed at any time to allow substitution of one brush head for another, and it also allows the brush to be revolved onthe handle and adjusted-at any desired angle thereto to reach any' point on the inner or outer surfaces of the teeth, and when the bristles at the outer end of the brush are worn, the brush head may be turned end for end on its pivot, the boss 14 slipping into the recess 13 and holding the brush head in alinement with the handle. When this construcor the part which carries the brush heady will allow the convenient insertion of `the brush head and hold it securely in place'.
In Figs. 9 and. 10 I have shown another modification, which consists in a brush head 16 having beveled surfaces 17 which are adapted to engage similar surfaces provided on the flanged edges 18 of the handle. A
-pivot screw, similar to the one described,
connects the middle portion of the brush head 16 with the handle and allows the brush head to be revolved to reverse it on the handle and the engagement of the beveled surfaces of the brush head and the flanges on the handle will operate to hold the head securely in alinement with the handle. y
In Fig. 11 I have illustrated a conical recess 13 in the brush head that is adapted to receive aconical projection 14 that is pressed or punched out of the handle part 2. In other respects the mounting of the pivot screw is substantially the same as heretofore described.
The handle of the brush, and the part or holder inewhich the brush head is'mounted, may be of any7 suitable material, and the size of the holder and the brush itself may be increased or decreased, and, if preferred,
the bristles at one end of the brush head may be made of a shape to fit the outer surface of the teeth, While those at another part of the head may be formed to fit the inner tooth surfaces. This, however, I regard as aninmaterial modification, as the bristles may be varied in length or form and `still be within the scope of my invention. .v
I-may also apply this invention` to other brushes, such as hair and clothes brushes or those used in manicuring.
I claim as my invention l. A tooth brush comprising a handle provided with a flexible extension at one end and a boss formed thereon, a brush head centrally pivoted on said extension and adapted to be turned end for end on its pivot in alinement with said handle, said brush head having notches therein to receive said boss and adapted to be disengaged from said boss when lateral pressure is applied to said head.
2. A tooth brush comprising va handle provided with a `flexible extension at one end, a brush head centrallypivoted on said extension and adapted to be turned end for end on its pivot in alinement with said handle, said extension and said brush head having means formed therein for interlocking and holding said brush head in alinement with said handle, lateral pressure upon said brush head disengaging said interlocking means. y
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 31st` day of October 1913.
