le it known that il, Miznnn B. WARD, a citizen of' the United States, residing at Marshall, inthe county of Harrison and State of Texas, have .invented a new and useful Type-Vriter Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is adapted to be employed primarily for shifting the 'carriage of a typewriter by foot or leg action, thus avoiding the necessity of removing the hand from the keys of the typewriter to edect a shifting of the carriage at the end of the line.
The invention aims to provide novel means whereby a typewriter carriage may be shiftedas aforesaid, the construction being such that the carriage may be stopped at any desired point.
Aanother object of the invention is to provide novel means whereby the key shift levers of a typewriter, the movable tabulating element and the back spacing member may be operated.
.lt is within the scope of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.

The invention contemplates the use of a supporting structure which may be of .any desired form. ln the present instance and by way of illustration, the supporting structure is depicted as comprising forward legs 1 and rear legs 2. Mounted upon the pedal support 4 as shown best in Figs. land 3 is an angle bracket 10 comprising an upright arm 11 provided with a bearing 12', there being bearings 14 on the foot of the angle bracket.
Journaled for rocking ymovement in the bearings 14 is a shaft 15 to which is secured a pedal 16. Attached to one end of the shaft 15 is a segment 17 meshing into a beveled pinion 18`secured to an upright shaft 1,9 journaled in the bearingl 12 and supported against downward movement by the foot of the angle bracket 10. As shown in Fig. 8, the shaft 19 may be journaled adjacent its upper end in a bearing 2O carried by one of the side braces Secured to the-upper end of. the shaft 19 is a wheel 21. About the wheel 21 are trained in opposite directions iexible elements 22 engaged around idlers 23 carried by ther table 7 or otherwise ,mounted, the flexible elements 22 passing upwardly through openings 24 in the table.

` Thewheel is provided with a depending rin1'52a within the contour of which is placed a removable, cone-shaped clutch shoe 52 held in placeby melans'of a' set screw 53. The clutch shoe 52 is adapted to coperate with the-coneshaped upper end. of a clutch member 54 loose olithe shaft 43, the clutch member. 54 beingprovided with a recess 55 in which the collar 43 is housed. The invention includes a resilient bracket 56, the lower end of which is attached to the table 7 orto some other accessible portion of the'machine, the
diverging arms 57 provided with shafts' 58 which support. the -rollers 59 engaged in a groove 60 formed .in fthe periphery of the clutch member 54. The lower end face of the clutch member 54 is circumferentially inclined as shown at 61. and is provided with' .a lshoulder 62. i

Let it befsupposed that it is desired to shift from thelower case to the capitals on a typewriter embodying aV shift key adapted for this purpose. Then the heel of the pedal I 16 is depressed, the shaft 15 is rotated, the
same actuating the segment 17, and rotation is imparted to the shaft 19 through the medium of the beveled pinion 18. The wheel 21 .is rotated and if one of the fiexible elements 22 be attached to the capital shift key of a typewriter, the change from small letters to capitals will be effected. If the toe of the the knee of the operator, and the flexible element 29 if attached to the proper portion of a typewriter, willl actuate the tabulating mechanism. The lever 32 may be swung to one side by the right kneeof the operator, and the flexible element 33, if connected up with the typewriter properly, will actuate the back spacing mechanism..
In order to retract the typewriter carriage, the pedal 40 is moved, the shaft 39 being rotated andthe segment 41 imparting a rotation `to the shaft 43 by means of the beveled pinion 42. When the shaft 43 is rotated, the head 63 will be rotated also, the wheels 103 coperating with the inclined surface 61 of the clutch member 54 and` effecting a raising of the clutch member. When the clutch member 54 is raised in the manner above described, the cone-shaped upper end of the clutch member will cooperate with the clutch shoe 52 on the wheel 45 and thus-the wheel 45 lis operatively ccnnected with the shaft 43 to rotate therewith, upward movement of the wheel 45 or a rotationthereof independently of the shaft 43 being prevented by the collar 46. 1When the wheel 45 is rotated, the flexible element y49 will be reeled in, thus pulling over the carriage of the typewriter.

Any suitable means may be provided for operatively connecting the ieXible element 49 with the typewriter carriage. With most makes of typewriters, the connection -of the flexible element 49 with the carriage may be accomplished directly. .When, however, the device herein disclosed is employed in connection with an @liver typewriter, resort is .had to the construction shown in Figs. 99 10, 11 and l2.
The left hand thumb wheel on the carriage of an Oliver typewriter is shown at 65 and the thumb wheel shaft is shown at 66. About the shaft 66 is placed a bushing 67 held in place by a s et screw 68. An arm .69 is shown and the same terminates at its upper end in an eye in which the bushing 67 is received, the eye being denoted by the numeral 70. Projecting laterally from the arm G19 .is an extension 71 terminallyprovided lwith an enlarged head 72 equipped with a notch 73. The notch is adapted to slide upon a small bar ordinarily found on the back side of the carriage of an Oliver typewriter. This sliding movement is very slight and ordinarily is of no greater extent than a quarter of an inch, this movement representing the lateral movement of the thumb wheel 65 in order to permit a spacing of the platen.
The foregoing description as above given presupposes that it is' desired to use the standard button or thumb wheel of an Oliver typewriter. In Figures l1- and 12 there is shown a construction in vwhich a special thumb wheel 7 5 is provided9 the sleeve'there of being shown at74 and receiving the shaft 76. The sleeve 74 is held to the shaft 76 by means of across pin 7 7 or in any other suit able manner. The sleeve 74 is provided with spaced' annular Hanges 7 8 between which the arm 7 9 is movably received. The arm 79 is offset as shown at 80 to receive the sleeve 74 and the offset portion 8O of the'arm cooperates with a removable cap 81 held in place by securing elements 82.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is `l. In a device of the class describeds a typewriter support; a pair of-'vertical shafts journaled on the supportl adjacent the sides thereof; a pair of horizontal shafts mounted to rock on the support adjacent the bottom thereof; pedals carried by the horizontal shafts whereby the same may be operated selectively; angularly disposed intermeslfiingA gear elements operativelyconnecting each of the horizontal shafts with one of the vertical shafts; wheels assembled with the upper ends of the vertical shafts; and flexible ele-- ments carried by the wheels and adapted for connection with movable elements of a typewriter.
