Be it knovvn that FRANK M. Ferentino,
a citizen of lthe United States, residing at Pl'liladelphia, in the county of fhilaflelpliia anrlState of Pennsylvania, have invented. `certainnevv and useful. inproveinents in Railv\'ay-SWitches, of which the ollovvingis a specification.
Theobjeet of my inventionis to provide a railway switch novel, simple and ellicient construction. having provision, first, whereby itaviil he impossible for Wheel flanges-to 'pass between the main track rail and .thesivitch tongue when the latter is in position toclirect the wheels from the main tracl'; secondly, whereby in one position ot the mechanism, the side Walls of the main track groove will he continuous and uniuterruptcfl. ,at .the junction of the main track groove and the branch groove, and, in anotherfposition of the mechanism, the side Wallso'the branch groove will loe continuous and uninterrupted at the junctiony ol the branch groove and and, thirdly, whereby various novel and aflvantageous results are attained.

The tongue 1l" is .flown ita upper tions of the grooves beyond the ends of the tongue, and the 'licor of the main track groove is provided with a point portion 24 which extends between and separates the di verging faces 21 and 22 of the tongues 17 and 18, respectively.
To operate the switch, the tongues 17 and 18 are raised andlowered in alternate succession, and when the tongue 18 is raised, an uninterrupted main track Oroove is presented, and when the tongue 17 is raised, an uninterrupted branch track groove is presentedY 'To thus raise and lower the tongues 17 and respectively. The sleeves 27 and 28 are provided with upper and lower cams 29 and 30 which, engage the adjacent ends of the switch tongues 17 and 18, as shown, and the cams 29 and 30 of the two sleeves are so related to each other and to the tongues that when the sleeves are turned in the direction ofthe arrows in Fig. 9, the tongue 18 will be raised and the tongue 17 will be lowered, and that when' the sleeves are turned in the reverse directions, the tongue 18 will be loweredand tlietongue 17 will be raised. The sleeves 27 and 28 are provided with coacting gear wheels 31, so that when one sleeve is turned in yone direction the. other will be turned in the reverse direction, as
indicated by theJarrows in Fig. 9, and engaging the teeth of one of the gear wheels 31 are the teeth of a gear rack 32 which' is mounted'to slide in theframe 9. The rack '32 has an upwardly extending slotted lug 33, and extending into the slot in the lug 33 is a pin 34which projects from an arm 35 `on a head 36`which is rotatably, mounted on a pin or shaft 37 within thev box 2. 36 has anopening or socket 38therein for the reception of a bar-or other device, by means of which the head 36 may be turned, and the socket 38 is exposed through an opening 39 in a plate or cover 40 for'the box 2, to
. permit the insertion of the o erating device.
It will be readily understoo that when the .head 36 is turned, the pini34 will engage the lug 33 and slide the rack bar 32 which will turn the sleeves 27 and 28 for the operation of the switch.
I claim: 1. In a railway switch, the combination of a frame, a pair of vertcallyfmovable switch tongues mounted therein, a pair of shafts The head-4 mounted to turn in said frame, cams on said shafts engaging said tongues, and gearing. between said shafts.
2. In a railway'switch, the combination of a frame, a pair of ve1'tically-inovable switch tongues mounted therein, a pair of shafts mounted to turn in said frame, cams onsaid shafts engaging said tongues, co-acting gear wheels on said shafts, a gear rack coacting with one vof said gear wheels, and means operative to reciprocate said rack.
3. In a railway switch, the combination of a frame,\a pair of vertically-movable switch tongues mountedA therein, a pair of shafts mounted to turn in said frame, cams on said shafts engaging said tongues, coacting gear wheels on said shafts, a gear rack coacting with one of said gear wheels, a head mounted to turn in said frame, and means operated by said head for reciprocating said rack.
4. In a railway switch, the combination of a frame, a vertically movable switch tongue mounted therein, a` shaft mounted to turn vin said frame, a cam on said shaft engaging said tongue, ahead mounted to turn 1n said frame, and gearing between said head and said shaft.
5. In a railway switch, the combination of a frame, a pair of verticallymovable switch tongues mounted therein, a pair of shafts mounted to turn in said frame, cams 'on said shafts engaging. said tongues, gearing be`' tween said Shafts, a head mounted to turn in said frame, and means operated by said head for turning said shafts.
