Be it known'that I, NATHANIEL 0. GOLD- SMITH, a citizenof the United States,and
a .resident of the city of 'Norwood, in the county of'Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Switch-Stands, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in switch stands for railwaytracks whereby a single lever intermittently operates two connecting rods so that two intermittent motions can be obtained by movement of a single lever. This stand is applicable to the operation of railway switches protected by distant signals, detector bars or derails. It is also applicable to the operation of what is known as the double slip switch crossings, having movable frog points, and Ihave chosen this condition to illustrate in the specification.
The invention consists of that certain novel construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter particularly pointed out and claimed whereby with a single stand.

As illustrated in Fig. 1, there are two crossing tracks from A to B and from C to D with permanent outside turn-out rails E and F for the turn-outs from A to D and C to B., The switch point rails for the two crossing tracks are indicated at G, H and-I, K, and the switch pointsfor the two turnouts at L, M for one end, and P, R at the' other, with the two pairs of switch turn-out rails S, T at one end, and U, W atthe other.
The switch "rails G, H are connected by connecting rod 1 with one arm of the crank le-" ver 2,and the switch rails I and K are =con-c nected by connectingrod 3 with the other. end of the crank lever 2, and this crank lever is pivotally mounted at its center-on the I plate 4 .so that the shifting of the crank lever will shift the switch points to open' and close the desired crossing track, the switch points I and K being moved in one, direction to and away from their respective stock rails and the other-switch points Gr and ii beingmoved in the oppositejdirection. The switch points L and M with their respective turn-out rails T and S are'likee wise connected by the connecting rods 5 and pivoted centrally on'the fixed plate 8, so that the rocklng of the crank lever 7 will shift 6 to the opposing armsiof the crank lever? the connected pairsof points in opposite directions. In the same way, the switch points P and R with their respective turn-out rails U. and WV are connected by the rods 9 and 10- with the opposing arms of the crank lever 11, pivoted centrally on the fixed plate 12, so that the rockingjofthis. lever will shift; the connected pairs of points in opposite directions. The two crank levers and 11. are connected together by the connecting rods 13 and 14:, each rod coupled to a crank arm on its respective-lever, so that withthe actuation of the'connecting rods 13 and 14 thetwo crank levers will be rocked in the, same direction. These connecting". rods '13 and 14 are coupled to a common bar-15, sliding in a box 16 and carrying a coupling pin 17 projecting laterally through a slot in the box. i
The various connection rods to the several.
switch points and turn-outs are actuated from a single switch stand with a single leprovided with the upwardly projecting support 19 forming a bearing. for the rock shaft 20 for the driving gears 21 and 22. These gears are segment gears keyed on the shaft 20 at opposite ends, and with the gear teeth disposed on opposite sidesof the vertical plane through the gears.' Each of these segment gears is arranged to engage its respective segment gear 23 and 24, and these driven gears 28 and 24 are separatelyand independently mounted on shafts 31, 32,, in 7 supports 25 and 26 projecting upwardly from the base 18. In order to throw these gears into mesh at the proper time, each driving gear 21 and 22 is provided with a laterally projecting lug 27 28, in the pathway of and to contact with a correspondmg lug 29, 30, on its respective driven gear.
As the respective driving and driven gears are in mesh during a part only of the movement, in order to support the driving gear when out of mesh, I provide a projecting flange 51, 52, for each driving gear which rides on a roller 33, 34, projecting laterally from the face of its respective driven gear 23, 24. This arrangement for supporting the mutilated gears when not in mesh also plays an important part in holding the switch points against the stock rails when they have been shifted by the gears. With this construction, the switch points are held tight when their operating gear is out of mesh and there is no liability of the rails springing back and leaving the points open which would render the crossing unsafe and dangerous.
The driven gear'23is coupled by the connecting bar 35 with the crank lever 2, and the driven gear 24 is coupled with the projecting stud 17 on the sliding bar 15 by the connecting bar 36. In this way, the rocking of the two driven gears actuates the switch points. For the purpose of adjusting the throw of those connecting bars, I provide an eccentric washer construction. Projecting outwardly from the faces of the two driven gears are studs upon which is mounted an eccentric sleeve 37, and each connecting bar is mounted around its respective sleeve. T he inner end of the sleeve is provided with a lateral flange 38 formed with a series of notches 39; while on the outer face of each of the driven gears 23, 24, a lug 40, 41 is formed to engage one of these notches. It will be evident that by slipping off the con necting bars which are held in place by nuts 53, 54, and turning the eccentric sleeve, an adjustment in the length of the connecting bar can be obtained.
Mounted on and keyed to the shaft 20,
which carries the driving gears 21, 22, is the switch lever 43, provided with a hand piece 44, coupled to a sliding latch 45, the lower end of which is turned at an angle and arranged to engage the several notches 46, 47 and 48 in the fixed segment plate 49 mounted rigidly on the base. With the lever in horizontal position and extending forwardly, as illustrated in the drawings, the
connections are such that the crossin track will be set to permit a movement of trains from A to B. In order to shift the switch points to permit the movement of trains from C to D, the operator releases the latch and raises the switch lever to upright position, allowing the latch. to engage the notch 47. With this movement, the driving gears 21, 22 are rocked, but inasmuch as the gear 22 is not in engagement with its driven gear, the only gear that is driven is the gear 23, which shifts the connecting bar 35 to the right and rocks the crank lever 2 so as to draw toward the crank lever the connecting rod 1 and push away the connecting rod 3, thus shifting the switch points so as to permit the passage of trains from C to D. A further movement of the switch lever into a rearward horizontal position with the latch engaging the notch 48 brings the driving gear 22 into engagement with the driven gear 24, while at the same time the gears 21 and 23 become disconnected. With this latter movement, the connecting rod 36 is shifted to actuate the pair of crank levers 7 and 11, and the switch points and turn-out rails are shifted to permit passage of trains from C to B or from A to D.
With my segment or mutilated driving and driven gear construction, with the gears supporting each other when out of mesh, I provide a very effective and substantial con.- struction which can be readily and easily operated by the throw of the single switch lever.
For use in operating distant signals and the like, one of the connecting bars can be coupled to the distance signal and the other to the switch points, so that the first movement of the operating lever will operate the signal and the second movement the switch. connections.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Q 1. In combination with a railway crossing having switch points and turn-outs for crossing and turning out, of a switch stand comprising a pair of segment driving gears with segment driven gears therefor arranged to engage their respective driving gears different points during the common actuation of the driving gears, and connecting rods, one for each driven gear, with single lever for actuating both driving gears whereby the tracks may be set for either crossing line or the turn-outs.
2. In combination with a railway crossing having two pairs. of movable switch points for the crossing and four pairs of movable switch points and turn-out rails for the turnouts, a crank lever with connecting rods, one for each pair of crossing switch points, a pair of crank levers with connecting rods, one for each pair of switch points and turnouts, of a switch stand comprising a pair of segment driving gears, with cooperating segment driven gears set to engage their corresponding driving gears at diiferent points during the common actuation of the driving gears, a single lever for actuating the driving gears, and a single connecting bar for each driven gear with couplings therefor to the several pairs of switch points and turnouts whereby the tracks may be set for either crossing line or the turn-out.
3. In combination with a railway crossing having two pairs of movable switch points for the crossing and four pairs of movable,
switch points and turn-out rails for the turnouts, a crank lever with connecting rods, one for each pair of crossing switch points, a pair of crank levers with connecting rods, one for each pair of switch points and turnouts, and a connecting bar coupling the latter connecting rods together, of a switch stand comprising a pair of segment driving I gears with connecting segment driven gears set to engage their corresponding driving gears at different points during the common actuation of the driving gears, a single lever for actuating the driving gears, and con-' necting bars coupling the driven gears one to the crank lever for the crossing switch points, and the other to the crank levers for the turn-outs, whereby the actuation of the single switch lever. will set the rails for either crossing line or the turn-outs.
4. In a device'of the character specified,

said shaft carrying a mutilated driving gear having a flange in a plane adjacent to and parallel with the gear, in combination with a mutilated driven gear havinga roller in a plane adjacent to and parallel with its gear, the two parts so arranged that the flange of the drivinggear cobperates with the driving gear cooperates with the roller of the driven gear, said gears also provided with lugs to throw same into mesh.
6. In a device ofthe character specified,

8. In a device of the character specified,
