T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JonN \V. BECKMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond Hill, Long Island, in the city of New York, borough of Queens, in the county of Queens and State of New York,-have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Toilet-Powder Containers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to receptacles for face powder and analogous material, and the object of the invention is to provide an inexpensive container and dispenser in which the powder may be sold, having a simple controlling device by which the contents may be delivered in the desired quantities without danger of leakage, and in the complete form of the invention, provided with a powder-putt and mirror attached to and forming part of the closure for the con- 'tainer.
The invention consists in certain details of constructionand arrangement by which the above objects are attained, to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification and show an approved form of the invention.

, A is the cylindrical. body of the container, closed at the upper end by a cap B lnclosing the body and secured thereto by the engage ment of the flange B inan annular groove (1. The cap is slightly coned, as shown, and terminates in a circular extension or chamber 13 having a central aperture for the protrmlingend of a valve-rod D and containing a felt washer or other simple pack ing ring cemented in the chamber and adapted to prevent the escape of powder M around such rod.
Within the body A, above the lower end of the latter, is a false bottom or diaphragm C downwardly coned to facilitate the downward flow of powder, and held by the engagement of its circular margin in an annular groove a At the center of the diaphragm is a circular valve-opening receivmg a downwardly-opening conical valve D matching thereto and arranged when forced downwardly from the valve-opening or seat to permit the delivery of powder; the extent of such downward movement of the valve-rod l) is limited by the contact of a cap or pushbutton D on the protruding upper end of the rod, with the upper face of the extension The valve 1) is held normally closed by a helical spring E inclosing the lower portion of the rod and abutting at one end against the upper face of the diaphragm C,
()n the lower margin or skirt of the body at opposite locations are inverted L-shaped indentations or channels A adapted to receive similarly located points or projections F on the ring F and thus lock the cover in place in the well-known manner analogous to a bayonet connection.
Within the cover and cemented to the innerdace of the mirror F is a tuft of wool or the like extending above the ring F and serving as a powder puff N. The pufi also serves as a packing to prevent leakage of powder through the joint between the body and cover.
As the whole is intended to be sold asa powder package and discarded when the contents are exhausted, it is im erative that the construction be extremely inexpensive, and it is also highly important that the powder. be securely held to prevent l akage when carried by the user or transported in baggage. The valve-opening in the diaphragm 0 being formed by suitable dies offers a sharp edge of dependable regularity, against which the conical valve seats itself closely and is held in close contact therewith by the expansive force of the spring E, thus'afi'ord- 71,193,223 (val inga reliable cut-oil for the pmwler. The lower convolution of the spring terminates in an outwardly extending arm it, Figs. 2' and 5, of sutlicient length to prevent the entrance or engagement of the spring into the valve-opening.
The valve 1) and its stem or rod D are preferably formed. integrally from a single piece of wire by an upsetting process analogous to that by which the heads of wire nails are produced, andv in the process of manufacture two spurs or outwardly and down. Wardly projecting prongs D l) are formed,

The cap or button I) stamped to shape and forced upon the llllllfii end of the valverod to engage therewith frictioually. llownward pressure upon the button forces the valve D from itsseat in the valve-opening and delivers a small quantity of powder through the annular orifice thus produced, and the compression of the spring thus in dueed moves each of its convolutions slightly but suliiciently to agitate the powder in the immediate vicinity of the valve-rod and valve-opening and insures a free how.
Although the disk l described as a' mirror, 1t may be of any material, and the pull N may be omitted, or the bottom of the body A may be left open and the powder re ceived therethrough upon. an independent pull or a substitute therefor.
The material of the container is preferably thin sheet metal, but other suitable materials may be employed.
It is proposed to ma h an extremely small size of the container, adapted to be conveniently carried in a purse or vanity-bag; it will be noted that the simple inexpensive construction shown permits such manufacture to be economically practicable.
I claim 1. In a device of the character described,
a body having a top, a removable bottom portion for said body, a false bottom retained within the body between the bottom and top, a spring-aetuatml valve rod movable through an opening; in the top, and a valve carried by the lower end of the valve rod and disposed between the bottom oi the body and the false bottom and adapted to seat against the latter.
2. In a device of the character described, a body having a top, a removable bottom portion for said body. a false bottom retained within the body between the bottom and top. a spring-actuated valve rod movable through an opening in the top.- a valve carried by the lower end of the valve rod. and disposal between the bottom of the body andthe false bottom and adapted to seat against the latter. and n'ieans on the valve rod exteriorly of the top to engage the latter and limit the opening movement of the valve.
3.. A device of the character described comprising a body, a conical cover therefor,
a removable bottom therefor, a. conical diaphragm within the body between the bottom and top and having an opening with valve seat, a valvadapted to said seat from the under side of the diaphragm, a. valve rod carrying said valve and guided in the cover and a spring around said rod within the body having one and secured to the rod and' the other bearing against said diaphragm.

A. device of the character described comprising a body, a removable bottom therefor, a. top therefor, a removable conical diaphragm within the body having an opening and valve seat, a valve fitted to said seat from the under side of the diaphragm, a valve rod carrying the valve and movable through the top and a ring around said valve rod within the body with one end socured to said rod and the inner end having its lower convolution terminating in an outwardly extending arm engaging the diaphragm and preventing the entrance of the spring into the valve opening.
