Description

E. H. CLARK.
COMBINED PEN AND BLOTTER.
APPLICATION FILLED JUNE 2s. 1915.
Patented July 11, 1916.
Wil/nemo Para Application led J' une 23, 1915. Serial No. 35,886.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDWARD I-I. CLARK, a subject of the King of Grreat Britain, residing at Winnipeg, in the Province of Manitoba and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Pens and Blotters, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a pen and a blotter associated with the pen and whereby the blotter can be conveniently used to blot the writing made by the pen.
The invention comprehends, among other features, the provision of a pen carrying a blotter, with the pen constituting the handle or holder for the blotter, theblotter being normally invisible when the pen is in use but adapted to be exposed for blotting the writing made by the pen.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar charactersof reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 v`s a fragmentaryv vertical longitudinal sectionalview taken through a fountain pen showing my invention; Fig.
2 is a similar view with the sheath shown' removed; and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the .line 3-3 in Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the views, the pen is indicated by the numeral v10 and includes the usual barrel 11 which, near its inner end, is slightly enlarged to form an annular seat or abutment 12. A substantially cylindrical blotter 13 closely encircles the barrel 11 and in cross sectionV the diameter of the blotter 13 is slightly greater than the diameter of. the inner end of the barrel 11 adjacent the reduced portion thereon.l The blotter 13 has its outer Aend bent inwardly or cupped, as shown at 14, a suitable headed screw 15 being arranged to screw into a threaded opening in the substantially solid outer end of the barrel and wedge the inwardly bent or cupped portion of the blotter between the barrel and the head of the screw, furtliermore, carrying a spring-like catch 16 adapted to receive aprojecting member 17 extending from the inner end of a sheath 18, which is adapted Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 11', 1916.
to fit over the barrel and inclose thevblo'tyter, thef free end of the sheath when 1n this position being in juxtaposition With relation tothe seat or abutment 12, and it will be seen, with reference to Fig. 1 in the drawing that the member 17 will engage with the catch 16 and the sheath will thus be held against accidental removall and will entirely inclose the blotter.
In the use of the pen, after the writing has been produced in the usual manner, the sheath is removed from the barrel by pulling outwardly v thereon, thus exposing the circular or cylindrical blotter 13 held t upon the barrel by having its inwardly bent portion secured to the screw 15. The penis now laid upon the paper having the writing thereon and with the hand rolled or advanced over the paper so that the projecting cylindrical surface of the blotter 13 will come` in rotary contact with the portion of the paper.v having the Writing thereon and blot the writing.
With a device of the character described it will be clearly seen that there is provided a structure that will have a compact appearance and in which the blotter will at all times form a part of the pen, the blotter,` when it becomes worn out being removed from its encircling relation to the barrel to permit of inserting a new blotter in its place. i
The pen carries the usual closure 19 which when the pen is not in use has inserted 'therein the enlarged end of the barrel'11 and the free end of the sheath 18 in the usual manner.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is In combination with the body of a pen, a blotter encircling the body, a screw fitting vinto the body and engaging the blotter to hold the same against removal, a sheath for the blotter and encircling the body of the pen, a catch on the screw, and a projection on the sheath engageable with the catch to hold the sheath against accidental removal.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses. v
EDWARD CLARK.
