THREAD-TENSION" DEVICE FOR SHUTTLES.
Application filed. November 2'7, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thread-Tension Devices for Shuttles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a thread tension device for shuttles, and, in particular, it relates to an improvement in the construction of the delivery eye or bushing shown and described in Patent No. 849,212, of April 2, 1907 to Daudelin.
The device shown in the above patent is made of solid metal throughout so that portions thereof may be provided with exterior threads. The friction of the yarn or thread running through the eye of that device in time wears the device so that it must be replaced by a new one.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a device which will not be subject to the wear of the thread and will therefore last indefinitely. To that end I make the thread-engaging or guiding portion of the device of glazed porcelain which will provide a smooth guiding surface, and cement a threaded metal head to the porcelain )art. 1 The above and other objects and the novel features of my invention will be apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a side view of a bushing or guide embodying'my invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the guide through the longitudinal slot therein; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the guide, the parts being shown separated; Fig. 1 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 1-4: of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, the thread guide comprises two members which are rigidly connected together, a porcelain body member 10 and a metal cap member 11. The porcelain body member 10 is substantially cylindrical in form having a substantially central cavity 12 extending into one end thereof and a reduced part 18 at the other end constituting a stem. A slot 14 extends transversely of the body 10 inter mediate the ends of the latter at a point approximately at the bottom of the cavity 12. Said slot 1 1 terminates in eyes 15 and 16 which are located on diametrically opposite Specification of Letters Patent.

sides of the body, the eye 16 forming the delivery eye of the device. A slot 17 extends longitudinally of the body 10 from its outer end to the eye 15 to form a passageway through which the thread may be passed into the slot 14 and eye 16. The thread runs through the cavity 12 and eye 16. The outer edge 18 of the slot 17 is located nearer the center of the device than the opposite edge 19 so as to guide the thread into slot 17. The surface of the porcelain body including the parts over which the thread runs is glazed to provide a smooth surface to diminish friction.
The metal cap member 11 has a cavity 20 at one end adapted to receive the stem 13 of the porcelain body 10 and said stem is firmly secured in the cavity 20 by a suitable cementitious substance 21. The metal cap and porcelain body are therefore rigidly secured together as a unitary device. The exterior cylindrical surface of the cap is threaded as at 22 to fit the corresponding threads in the opening in the shuttle in which the de vice is fastened. The outer end of the cap has a transverse slot 23 to receive a screwdriver whereby the article may be turned in the shuttle to screw it into place. The exterior diameter ofthe metal cap is slightly greater than that of the porcelain part so that the latter may be easily inserted in the shuttle.
It is to be understood that either of the two parts comprising the device may be pro vided with the socket and the other with the stem to fit the socket, and that the body member 10 may be of any suitable vitreous material. It will be seen that I have provided a device which has much better wearing properties than the device of the prior art, embodying as it does a porcelain or vitreous member which may be providedv with a glazed surface and a metal member which may be readily provided with threads to Secure the device to a shuttle.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A new article of manufacture comprising a thread guide bushing consisting of a glazed porcelain member having a threadguiding eye and a threaded metal head fixedly secured to said porcelain member.
2. A new article of manufacture comprising a glazed porcelain member having a thread-delivery eye and a threaded metal head memberione (if said members a slot at one end an d havi ng a socket stem fitting a socket in the other vmember, therein, said stem fitting said socket, and 10 and cement in saidsocket rigidly and percement in'said socket rigidly and permamanently uniting said members. a nently uniting said head and porcelain 5 3. A new article of manufacture compri'smember.
ing a glazed porcelain member having a In testimony WhereofI affix my signature.
tl'i-read-d'elivery eye and a stem atone end thereof, a threaded 'metal head provided 7 JOHN R. MITCHELL.
