Illflt NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHURNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,664, dated August 29, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. YEAGER, of Lanesville, in the county of Harrison and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ghurns; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying dra-win g and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this speciiication.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a churn, as will be hereil'lafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical, and Fig. 2 a transverse vertical section of my churn. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a portion of the cream-box.
A represents the frame-work within which the cream-box B is suspended and moves. This box is rectangular in shape, of any desired dimensions, and supported upon two bent rods, a a, which are suspended on top of the frame A. The two rods a a are nearer together at the bottom than at the top, which gives the box two distinct motions. Besides moving back and forth as a pendulum, one end of the box is rising while the other is falling, which causes the cream to be thrown much harder against the breakers in the box than it would be were the rods straight down. To one of the rods a is fastened apitman, C, the other end of which connects with a crank-shaft, D. Upon one end of this sha-ft is a cog-wheel, E, gearing with a similar wheel, G, turned by a crank, H, whereby the box is operated. I I are two breakers placed crosswise, at suitable distance apart, in the box B. These breakers are composed of vertical slats b b connecting hor izontal bars d (l. The slats b b do not stand square across the bars d d, but stand quarterin g, as shown, and the breaker itself stands square with the box, and they are placed in V-shaped grooves in the side of the box, so that they can be readily removed or inserted at will.
Havi] 1g thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
rIhe cream-box B, suspended upon two swinging rods, a a, which are closer together at the bottom than at the top, whereby the box obtains a twofold motion, back and forth, and one end rising while the other is falling, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of June, 1871.
J. M. YEAGER. IVitnesses JOHN L. WoLFoRD, F. A. HORNER.
