Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 6, 1916.
'Application filed. February 27, 1915. Serial No. 10,922.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PAUL BIPLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rule-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an apparel pocket, such as the rule pocket of a pair of overalls or the like, with a simple and inexpensive device for retaining in the pocket a rule. or the like elongated implement securely and in a manner to facilitatc inserting the rule and avoid unduly bulging the pocket and wearing the same.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 shows a rule-pocket of a pair of overalls provided with the holder constituting this invention and a pocket-rule held in place by the holder; Fig. 2 is a substantially similar view, the pocket appearing in section; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on'the line w:r in Fig. 1; and, Fig. 4 shows the holder removed from the pocket.
In carryin out my invention I take a strip a of sti sheet material, say steel, and bend the end portions, as at 6, both upon the same face of the strip and more or less flat against the same. The end portions are then bent away from the strip, as at c 0, so as to stand more or less obliquely to the body of the strip. The extremities of said end portions are then preferably curved slightly more or'less toward the body of the strip, as at d (Z. Inthe preferred form the body is suitably covered with adhesive tape 6 or some other such material so as to prevent its edges from having an undue abrading action on the fabric of the pocket; this, however, is not indispensable. The device thus formed is now arranged in the rulepocket f of a pair of overalls or the like, so that its end portions project upwardly, the strip being flexed midway between its ends and in such a way that the face of the strip from which the portions 0 0 project is that having the concave curvature. This flexing of the device may be formed in the same in the process of manufacture, it desired, as shown in Fig. 4. In any event, it is desired that the flexing follow a curve of relatively large radius, so that when the de vice is fitted into the pocket its twoupdevice is in place in the pocket, a rule orsimilar elongated article may be readily inserted into and removed from thepocket, whose mouth is held more or less distended by the device, and such rule or the like will be securely held against accidentally falling or being jarred out of the pocket. It will be apparent that two or more articles may be retained in the pocket by the holder. It will be further apparent that by constructing the device so that its legs bear substantially continuously against the side margins of the pocket the latter is saved from undue wear, the wear being distributed from top to bottom of each side of the ocket.
having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination, with an apparel pocket, of a holder for a rule or the like consisting of an elastic stifi' strip flexed crosswise or" its broad surfaces at about its middle portionand arranged in said pocket with its legs projecting upwardly and respectively adjoining and pressing against the side margins of the pocket, said strip having coacting gripping portions extending obliquely and downwardly from its legs.
2. The combination, with an apparel pocket, of a holder for a rule or the like consisting of an elastic stifi' strip flexed crosswise'of its broad surfaces at about its middle portion and arranged in said pocket with'its legs projecting upwardly and respectively adjoining and pressing against the side margins of the pocket, said strip having its end portions rebent inwardly and extending obliquely and downwardly into gripping relation to each other.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence 05? two witnesses.
