JOHN H. BUDDY OF LEGRANID, MICHIGAN.-
CHILDS CARRIAGE AND CRADLE COMBINED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1%, 1916.-
Application filed April 26, 1915. Serial No. 2 1,075.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN HENRY BUDDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Legrand, in the county of Cheboygan and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Childrens Carriages and Cradles Combined; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to combined childrens carriages and cradles, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a childs carriage which can be quickly converted into a cradle and in which means are provided for holding the body of the carriage rigid and for permittingthe body to swing sidewise on springs.
The foregoing and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a combined carriage and made in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a front end view of the same, Fig. 3 is a rear end view, Fig. 4: is a detail perspective view of the means for prepenting the carriage body from swinging sidewise as a cradle, Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view showing one of the pivots on which the body of the carriage is mounted, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the blocks for holding the springs connected to the frame.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the curved side rails of the carriage, to which the front and rear axles .2 and 3 are connected by means of bearings 4:. The frame bars 1 are provided with vertical members 5 and 6 which extend up in front and in rear of the body 7 of the carriage. Springs 8 and 9 are connected to vertical members 5 and 6 by means of blocks 10, said blocks having one side concave as at 11 and the opposite side having a longitudinal groove or recess 12 in which the spring memhere 8 and 9 are connected by means of suitable bolts extending through the spring blocks and members 5 and 6 as shown at 13. The vertical members 5 and 6 are connected by curved rails 14:, and connected to the rails 14E are depending slotted plates 15. Connected to the upper curved portion 8 of the springs 8 are inverted V-shaped hangers 16, said hangers having nuts 17 connected thereto to attach the hangers to the springs, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. Projecting from the opposite ends of the body 7 are supporting elements in the form of hooks 18 which extend through the hangers 16 and support the body 7 pivotally when converted into a cradle. Connected at the top of the body 7 at the rear thereof is a. slotted guide plate 19, and pivoted stops 2O aremounted in the slot 21 on the pin 22, said stops being adapted to be swung out to engage the top 8 of the spring to prevent the body 7 from swinging when used as a carriage body. A handle 23 extends backwardly from the rear of the carriage, and a suitable folding top 2 1 is pivoted at 25 to the body of the carriage. Cross braces 26 are connected to the opposite frame bars 1.
Wheels a are journaled on the axles 2 and 3.
When used as a carriage, the pivoted stops 20 are swung on their pivotal points 22 to bear on top of the spring portion 8 thus preventing the swinging motion of the body 7 of the carriage, but providing a spring movement up and down of said body. WVhen the stops 20 are swung into the slots 21, the body 7 will swing back and forth to operate as a cradle.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a combined carriage and cradle made in accordance with this invention is comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, is strong, durable and eflicient in construction, and can be quickly converted from a carriage to a cradle.
Various changes may be made in the de tails of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claims.
What is claimed is 1. A combined carriage and cradle comprising a frame mounted on wheels, said frame having upright portions connected by curved rails at the top, springs connected front and rear to the upright portions of the frame, U-shaped supports connected to the springs front and rear, hooks extendlng outward from the body of the carriage, and mounted in said U-shaped supports, and pivoted buttons for preventing the swinging of the body portion when used as a carriage, said buttons adapted to be swung out of the way of the springs to permit the body to swing readily as a cradle. 2. A combined childs carriage and cradle comprising a frame, upright members secured to said frame, a spring secured to each of said members, a carriage body, supporting elements secured to the body and to the springs, and a guide element secured to one of said frames and engaging one of said supporting elements.
3. A combined childs carriage and cradle comprising a frame, upright members secured to said frame, a spring secured to each of said members, a carriage body, supporting elements secured to the body and pivotally connected to the springs, and a guide element secured to one of said frames and engaging one of said supporting elements.
4;. A combined childs carriage and cradle comprising a frame, upright members secured to said frame, a spring secured to each of said members, a carriage body, means connecting the carriage body to said springs, and a stop pivoted to said carriage body, said stop being adapted to be moved into and out of engagement with one of said springs, and said stop holding said carriage body against swinging movement when in engagement with the spring.
5. A combined childs carriage and cradle comprising aframe, upright members secured to said frame, a spring secured to each of said members, a carriage body, supporting elements secured to the carriage body and pivotally mounted upon the springs, a guide element secured to one of said frames and engaging one of said supporting elements, and a stop connected to the carriage body, said stop being adapted to be moved into and out of engagement with one of said springs, and said stop holding the carriage body from swinging movement when in engagement With the spring.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
