EDWARD KIRBY BOTTLE, 0F ELMIRA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO AMEBICAN SALES BOOK COMPANY, LIMITED, OF TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, A CORPORATION OF ONTARIO, CANADA.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that L'EDWARD KIRBY Boring at Elmira, in the county of Chemung and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifolcling Devices,'-of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to manifolding devices, and with regard to certain more spe cific features thereof, to receptacles, each upper surface of which forms a writing sheets with manifolding media are adapted to be drawn.
One of the objects ,of the present invention is to provide a simple and practical device of the above character which will be cheap to manufacture.
Another object is to provide a compact and self-contained device into which the record sheets may be easily and quickly inserted without manipulation of any special mechanism.
A further object is to provide a device of the above character which will be durable in construction and efiicient in use.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists .in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claimsl.
In the' accompanying drawings, wherein are-shown two of various possible embodiments of this invention,-Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of one form of the complete device Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof; Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views of certain parts of the device shown injFigs. 1 and 2; Figs, 5 and 6 are a longitudinal section and plan view, respectively, of a modification of the present invention; and 7. is a perspective view of a portion of the web Similar' reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the different views of the drawings.
Referring now-to Figs. 1 and 2 in par-- MANIFOLDING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. r Patented B1 7, 1916. Application filed April 25, 1912. Serial Ito. 693,025.
. ticular, there is denoted at 1 a rectangular 'may be' drawn prior to passing over the upper surface of the receptacle which'is used as a writing table. A
The record sheet preferably employed in the present embodiment comprises a single web folded back and forth upon itself in a longitudinal direction, as shown .in Fig. 7, forming longitudinalfolding lines 5, 6
.and 7. The web is also-folded transversely to itselfalong the lines 8 (Fig. 1), and then the entire pad orweb is folded again at 9 into the compact arrangement, as clearlyshown. The web is drawn from the interior of the folded pad through the opening 4, a transverse guide 8 mounted upon the upper edge of the receptacle and between vertically disposed guides 9 and 10. Positioned betweenthese guides and at each side of the receptacle are a plurality of rotary cutters 11, 12, 13 and 14, respectively. Each of these cutters is mounted on a separate bracket 15, which in turn is pivotally mounted at 16 to the side of the receptacle,- whereby it may be swung out of the path of travel of the web, as shown by the position of the cutter 14.
While the present device is herein shown and describedwith relation to its application of a quadruplicate device, it is, of course, to be understood that by swinging the cutters into and out of operative rela-.
tion, a webfrom which anv desired num- V ber of records of a transaction may be ohthe web, may be handled. I
From the above it will be clear that as the web is drawn longitudinallv over the 'tained. according to the number of folds in upper surface of the receptacle these cutter blades, which are inserted between the adjacent pairs of leaves into which the web is to be subsequentlv divided. stretch thepaper laterally to remove wrinkles, define the told and cut'the web along its longitud'zi ally" folded lines. For instance, the out a 11 site side, will out along the fold 7 at the j opposite side of the web. If a web to be i divided into five leaves were used, the cutter 14 would be swung over into operative position to coact with the added fold. -After the web is severed into leaves, it is drawn past the opposite end of the receptacle which forms the writing table proper and through a holding clip 17, which also provides a cutting edge along which the leaves may be severed after being drawn out away from the writing table, as shown by the free ends in Fig.1.
The manifolding medium in the present embodiment comprises a plurality of carbon sheets 18, in this case three, wound upon a single roll 19 positioned in a receptacle 20 along one of the longitudinal sides of the receptacle. 'The carbon sheets aredrawn out through an opening 21, shown in Fig. 4, and across the table transversely to the movement of the record leaves. Each carbon sheet, of course, passes between an adjacent pair of record leaves. The free ends of the carbon sheets are secured by a holder or clip 22 along the opposite longitudinal edge of the receptacle, which also acts as a cutting edge for tearing off the worn carbon sheets.
In order to prevent the carbon sheets from being torn or mutilated by the rough cut edges of the record leaves as they are drawn along the table, there is provided a plurality of carbon clips 23, as shown in detail view in Fig. 3. These carbonyclips are pivoted at 24: beneath the hinged cover of the carbon roll receptacle, and are provided at their free ends with 2. turned overportion 25 in line with the edges of the web. This alinement is maintained by vertically disposed guides 26 and 27. Adjacent the pivot 24 is a 29 to hold the same in proper positlon. If only two carbon sheets are used, one of these clips is swung out of the path of travel of the record sheets, as shown in dotted position 30. These clips, as shown in Fig. 2, are disposed at opposite sides of the paper table, where the greatest tendency to tear the carbon sheets occur- A convenient method of operating a device of this character substantially as folthe table the rotary cutters will sever the web into individual leaves. The upper leaves are then turned back and the lower carbon fleet drawn out from the roll tioned in this alternate order.
projecting shoulder 28 which engages a pin lows: Assuming the folding web to be posithrough the opening 21 and laid thereover, its upper edge being engaged by the clips 23. The second record sheet is laid thereover and the next" carbon sheet placed in operative relation thereto, and so on until all of the leaves and carbon sheets are posiedges of the carbon sheet are caught and held by the clip 22 at the opposite side of the table, and the free edges of the record leaves similarly engaged by the holder or clip 17. The device is then ready for use. The transaction is recorded upon the upper leaf and reproduced through the carbon sheets upon the lower leaves. After completing the transaction the record leaves are drawn out and the upper three torn along the upper edge or clip 17, while the lower leaf passes through an opening 31 in the end of the receptacle and is wound on a roller 32, which may be manipulated by means of a knob 33 projecting to one side. A'permanent record of all the transactions of the machine is thus obtained.
It is of course to be understood that the term cutteror cutting edge used in referring to the rotary cutters and edge 17 is to be interpreted as a means for either cutting or exerting a tearing action on the web as it is manipulated.
Referring now to the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the general construction and operation are substantially the same. Instead of providing rotary cutters as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, there is provided a plate 34 hinged at each side of the receptacle in the same relative position as the cutter rolls. Diagonal cutter blades 35 may be inserted between the folds of the web and cut it along its folded lines in the manner above described. Owing to the diagonally disposed position of these blades, there will be exerted upon the web a lateral movement toward the fixed guides 9 and 10, thus preventing any intermediate bulging or irregularity as the leaves are subsequently fed'along the writing table. Instead of providing'a plurality of separate clips at each side of the receptacle for the carbon sheets, there is provided a single V-sha-ped clip 36 hinged at one side 37 for each carbon sheet and extending entirely across the table-to protect the edge. It will also be noted that in this modification, the
peat the same here.
As many changes could be made in the The free web along its folded lines into separate above construction and man apparently widely different embodiments of this im'en-' matter contained in the above descriptionor shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
