WILLIAM J'. BOILING, OF MONTGOMERY, WEST VIRGINIA.
WRENCH.
Application filed November 10, 1914.
' b all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. BOLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montgomery, in the county of Fayette and filtate of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in monkey wrenches, the object being to provide a wrench of a simple and coinparatively cheap construction, wherein the movable jaw may be quickly and effectively adjusted with relation to the stationary jaw.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a wrench of'this class wherein the jaws may be separated to adesired distance, the said distance being ascertained by suitable marks upon the shank of the stationary jaw, and to provide the same with means whereby the said jaws may be retained in said adjusted position.
With the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing: Figure l is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with the present invention, Fig. 2 is a similar view, the movable jaw and the operating member being shown in section, Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the movable jaw, and Fig. 5 is a similar view of the operating or adjusting member.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates the wrench in its entirety. This wrench includes a stationary jaw 2 having an angular shank 3 provided with a handle 41. The shank is provided upon its opposite sides and adjacent its ends with indicating marks 5, whereby the distance between the working face of the jaw 2 and the working faces of the movable jaws (presently to be described) may be accurately ascertained. The opposite edge of the shank 3 at a suitable distance from the head 2 is" provided with threads 6 which terminate with the connection of the shank with the handle 1. Arranged for longitudinal movement upon the shank 3 is a movable jaw 7, the same including a bod or carriage 8, and the opposite ends of sai body adjacent the handle 4: is formed with longitudinally ex- Specification of Letters Patent.

tending semi-cylindrical members 99 having interior threads 10.
The operating member or nut is indicated by the numeral 11, and includes a sleeve 12 having outer threads 13 which engage with the threads 10 of the segmental projections 9 of the member 8. The member 11 also includes a collar 13 which is annular and which is adapted to surround and engage with the segmental members 9 when the member 11 is arranged upon the shank 2. The member 11 is further provided with a milled head 14, and has its end opposite that provided with the threaded sleeve 13 formed with an angular portion 15, either the milled portion 14: or the angular member 15 serving as means for rotating the member 11 on the shank 3. The bore of the member 11 is provided with oppositely projecting threads 1616 which normally engage with the threads 6 to lock the movable jaw upon the shank of the stationary jaw but when the number 11 is rotated upon the shank, the
said threaded portion 16 will be disposed to the opposite sides of the shank so that the member 11 may move the movable jaw toward or away from the stationary aw. The threaded connection between the sleeve 12 and the segmental members 9 serve as means for retaining the member 11 normally connected with the movable jaw, but the handle 4: is removable, and both the jaw 7 and the operating member may be slid on the shank and separated if desired.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be pertectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
In a device of the class described, in combination a wrench shank. a fixed jaw thereupon, said shank being formed rectangular in cross section, said shank being formed upon opposite longitudinal edges with a serrated convex portion, a slidable carriage having a rectangular bore through which said shank projects, a jaw formed at one end of said carriage, a sleeve being threaded internally throughout its length, and having diametrically opposite arcuate dove-tailed grooves adapted to be presented opposite the non-serrated surfaces of said shank, said sleeve being threadedly connectecl'to the serrated portions, said carriage being formed at one end with a transverse shoulder and in a plane With said shoulder having internal Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, hy addressing the Commissioner of Patents, 7
upon said sleeve in advance of said collar and having an outwardly flaring surface connecting with said collar. 7
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence oftwo Witnesses.
