Application filed April 29, 1922. Serial No. 557,412.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE BROXTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Socket renches, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to wrenches, and more particularly to a socket wrench.
One of the main objects of'the invention is to provide a wrench of simpleconstruction and operation which is specially adapted for usein restricted spaces and is free of all projections whiclrwould interfere with use of the wrench. ,A further object is to provide a wrench of the character stated which may be quickly assembled or disassembled. Another object is to provide a wrench which may be readily produced at small cost. Further objects will appear from the detailed description.

Figure 2 is an elevation of the wrench taken in a plane at right angles to Fig. 1;

Figure 4 is a fragmentary section taken substantially on line H of Fig. 2.
The wrench includes a shank 1 provided at one end with a head 2 which is diametrically bored to receive anoperating rod 3. At the other end of shank 1 there is provided a cylindrical body 4 having inner and outer liametrical bores 5 and 6, respectively, which are disposed in parallel relation. A jaw 7 is slidably mounted in the outer end of body 4 and co-operates with a similar jaw 8 for gripping nuts and similar articles, each of these jaws having its inner surface formed to provide two faces disposed at an angle of for fitting about the corner portions of hexagon nuts. Jaw 7 is further provided with a neck 9 which fits snugly through a slot 10 extending from the outer end of body a and communicating with bore 6. At the inner end of neck 9 jaw 7 is provided with a short rack 11 which meshes with the threaded exterior of an adjusting nut 12' neck, this stud being threaded so as to thread lnto and out of operating nut 12 which is bored and threaded to receive the stud. By
turning nut 12 the'jaws 7 and8 maybe readily adjusted toward or away from each nut 12 and permit ready grasping of the same.- As will be noted-more clearly from F ig. 3, I the outer faces of the jaws are rounded to conform to the curvature" of sleeve 18 and these jaws taper away from' the head. This provides a very simple andefticient construction by means of which the jaws are efiectually. braced and all projec-- tions beyond body 4 which would interfere with use of the wrenchin restricted spaces are prevented. By moving the aws toward each other so as to be out of contact with sleeve 18, the sleeve may be threaded off of body 1, after which the aws may be threaded out of the body by turning nut 12 in proper direction. This permits the jaws to be readily removed and replaced when required.
What I claim is 1. In a socket wrench, ahead provided with two parallel bores extending diametrically of the head, a jaw provided with a rack fitting into one of said bores, a jaw having a stud fitting into the other bore, and a member carried by the head and engaging said stud and rack for adjusting the jaws toward and away from each other by operating said member. 1

aj aw provided with a rack movable in one of said bores, a second jaw provided with a stud movable in the other bore, and an interiorly and exteriorly threaded member mounted in the head and engaging said stud and the rack for adjusting the jaws toward and away from each other upon rotation of said member.
3. In a socket wrench, a head provided with two diametrically extending parallel bores, said head being further provided with a diametrically extending slot extending from its outer end and communicating with the outer bore, a jaw provided with a neck slidable in said slot and with a rack rigid with the neck and slidable in the outer bore,
a second jaw provided with a neck slidable in the slot and with a threaded stud rigid with the neck and slidable in the inner bore, and an adjusting nut disposed at right angles to the inner bore, said nut being interiorly and exteriorly threaded and engaging with the rack and the stud for adjusting the jaws toward and away from each other.
4. In a socket wrench, a. head provided with two diametrically extending parallel bores, said head being further provided with a diametrically extending slot extending from its outer end and communicating with the outer bore, a jaw provided with a neck slidable in said slot and with a rack rigid with the neck and slidable in the outer bore, a second jaw provided with a neck slidable in the slot and with a threaded stud rigid with the neck and slidable in the inner bore, an adjusting nut disposed at right angles to the inner bore, said nut being interiorly and e'xteriorly threaded and engaging with the rack and the stud for adjusting the jaws to-:
ward and away from each other, and a member detachably secured about the body and positively limiting outward movement of the aws.
5. In a socket wrench; a'body provided with two diametrically extending parallel with a rack rigid with the neck and slidable in the outer bore, said body being also pro vided withaninner slot establishing communication between the bores, a second jaw provided with a neck slidable in the outer slot and with an element rigid with the neck and slidable in the outer bore, said second jaw being further provided with a neck slidable in the inner slot and with a threaded stud rigid with the inner neck and operable in the inner bore, and an interiorly and e-Xteriorly threaded adjusting nut mounted in said longitudinally extending slot and in engagement with said-rack and said stud for adjusting the jaws toward and away from each other.
