Description

ff i /fQ/zc' PATENTE JUL 11 1871 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE C. WILCOX, OF WEST MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE MER- IDEN BRITANNIA COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COVERED ARTICLES FOR TABLE-SERVICE.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,026, dated July 11, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE C. WILcoX, of West Meriden, in the county of New H( ven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Covered Articles of Table-Service; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents, in-
Figure 1 a side View, and in Fig. 2 a vertical central section of the upper portion.
This invention relates to an improvement in articles of table-service such as sugar-bowls, tea and coffee-pots, butter-dishes, and other articles which are provided with covers5 the obj ect being to combine with such articles a call-bell 5 and the invention consists in combining` a gong-bell with and making it a part of the cover of such articles of table-service.
I represent the invention as applied to a su garbowl, that being an article of service which, upon most occasions, is required upon the table, espe- K cially in eating-houses.
A is the bowl, of any desirable form or design 5 B, the cover proper, which is constructed so as to form a support for the gong or bell C, through the center of which bell the striking-rod D is arranged in the usual manner for gong-bells. By
preference the cover beneath the bell is solid, as at E, Fig. 2. The gong should be set sufficiently high or in such position that the edge of the bell does note-ome in contact with the cover 5 and I generally so arrange the bell that it gives to the cover a central dome-shaped appearance, the striking-rod appearing as the handle or ornament by which the cover is raised or removed.
Vhile this invention maybe applied with equal facility to covers which are hinged to the vessel, I prefer to arrange it upon detachable covers, such as sugar-bowls, butter-dishes, Src.
While it is preferable, and probably cheaper in construction, that the bell should be arranged outside the cover, it will be evident that the object may be accomplished by the arrangement of the bell within the cover, the construction in either case adding little or nothing to the ordinary construction oi the cover, and thereby saving the eX pense to consumers of one article of table-service -that is, the ordinary call-bell.
I claim as my invention- The arrangement, as herein described, of a bell in the cover of articles of table-service, the said bell being made a part of such cover and constructed to be operated substantially as set forth.
.Y HORACE C. WILCOX.
