Application filed lanuary 25,1915. Seria1 Nb.4,272.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Roi EDWIN WHEELER, a citizen ofthe United States residing at Kittitas, in the county of Kittitas and'St-ate. of IVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pump-Cylinder Protectors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in protectors for pump barrels or cylinders and which are commonly known as rivet catchers and are designed to catch the rivets that frequently become disconnected from the joints between the parts of the rod employed to move the piston rod or working valve up and down, and which rivets when they become disconnected drop down into the working barrel of the well and seriously interfere with the proper working of the pump or valves and cause injury to the valve rod or pump and other portionsof, the pump by cutting and wearing the same and at times become lodged between the working parts of the pump or valves and the working barrel.
The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed and efficient device of this character which may be readily ap plied to the plunger rod of a pump and which will ofier very little resistance to the reciprocation of said rod.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section through a pump barrel showing tlns mproved protector in side elevat on therein; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the protector; Fig. 3 is a horizontal 7 section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4: is a similar view taken on the line H of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a similar View on line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
In the embodiment illustrated a pump barrel or cylinder 1 is shown having the usual piston or plunger rod 2 mounted to reciprocate therein and both of which may be of any suitable or desired length. The rod 2 has the usual valve 3 mounted thereon and disposed on said rod just above this specificationiof Letters Patent. Patenvlal ve isthe, catcheror protector constituting this invention' This catcher comprises aihollowinvertedtruncatedLeone-shaped; cup
5preferably constructed of sheet metal and having a cylindrical sleeve 6 at its lower smaller end of a size to encircle and closely fit'the rod 2 and it is secured to said rod by a clamping collar 7. This conical cup 5 1s preferably struck out of a sheet of metal plate and the side edges thereof are overlapped and secured together by riveting or in any other suitable manner, the seam of the lower end of the cup and of the sleeve 6 being left open to provide for expansion and contraction. The wider upper end of the cup is of a diameter slightly less than that of the cylinder 1 to which it is to be applied so as to permit the cup to move freely in the cylinder without contact therewith. A brace 8 extends transversely across the upper end of the cup 5 and has an outwardly bowed central portion 9 adapted to encircle one-half of the rod 2 and which has apertures 10 at the opposite sides of said bowed or looped shaped portion 9 to receive a cooperating clamping member 11 herein shown U-shaped with the free ends of its legs threaded to receive clamping nuts 12 after said legs have been passed through the apertures in the brace. The walls of this cup 5 are provided with a plurality of openings forv the passage therethrough of water or other liquid to prevent interference with the operation of the pump and these openings are herein shown in the form of longitudinally extending laterally spaced slits l3 arranged around the periphery of the cup.
The inverted cone shape of the cup 5 facilitates its downward passage through the cylinder 1' offering a minimum resistance and the arrangement of the slits there in for the passage of the water permits it to move in the opposite direction Without presenting much resistance.
From the foregoing description it will be obvious that should any rivets or other particles become loosened and drop down in the cylinder they will he caught by this cup 5 and held therein, thereby preventing them from injuring any of the parts of the pump and they may remain in the cup indefinitely tea-Jan; 11?, was;
open at both ends and adapted to encircle thereof mounted in said apertures, and a pump rod, said cup having a longitudimeans for fastening said legs in said apernally extending opening in its lower end to tures. a r provide for expansion and contraction, In testimony whereof Ihave hereunto set '5 means for clamping the lower end of said my hand in presence of tWo subscribing 15 cup to a rod, a brace extending transversely Witnesses.
across the larger end of said cup and having ROY EDWIN WHEELER. a bowed central portionwith apertures on a WVitnesses: opposite sides of said bowed portion and U- H. L. J OHNSEND,
10 shaped clamping member having the legs A. I. ODEGARD.
