To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH EISENMENGER, citizen of the United States, residing at Anthon, in the county of Woodbury and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F ence-Post Qaps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Ihis invention relates to an improved fence post cap and has for its primary object to provide a very simple, durable and efficient device for driving steel fence posts into the ground without in any way injuring the same.
The invention has for another and more particular object to providea stud or pin formed with a head on one end, a hollow cap member adapted to receive the upper end of the fence post, said pin extending through said cap member and into the post, the head thereof tightly fitting in one end of the cap member, and bearing directly upon the upper edge of the post, and means for wedging the head in the cap member under the action of repeated blows.
With the above and other objects in view as will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved driving cap applied to the upper end of a steel fence post. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the driving pin.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates a steel fence post which may be of any preferred construction, and provided with a pointed or tapering lower end so that the same will readily enter the ground under the driving force of repeated blows upon the upper end of the post.
My improved post cap consists of a tubular cylindrical sleeve 6 which is of suficient internal diameter to receive the upper end of a fence post. This sleeve is provided in its inner wall and at its upper end with a longitudinally inclined or tapering recess 7. The driving pin 8 consists of a cylindrical Specification of Letters Patent.

shank which is. adapted to be received within the hollow fence post and is formed with a cylindrical head or enlargement 9 on one end. This enlargement is adapted to fit tightly in the upper end of the cap sleeve 6. After the sleeve and pin have been arranged upon the upper end of the post as illustrated in the drawing the head 9 of the pin is repeatedly struck with a sledge and driven downwardly I he lower edge of said head bearing upon the upper edge of the fence post operates to drive the post into the ground. A wedge pin indicated at 10 is adapted to be inserted into the recess 7, and as the head 9 is driven downwardly into the hollow sleeve 5, the same is tightly wedged therein by said pin, so that the sleeve is securely locked to the driving pin. When it is desired to remove the driving pin from the sleeve, the upper edge of the sleeve is struck with the sledge and the sleeve forced downwardly upon the head of the pin so that the wedge 10 may be removed from the recess 7. It will be observed thatas the collar 6 which surrounds the fence post, is locked to the head of the driving pin by the wedge, the pin is supported upon the upper end of the fence post and lateral pressure of the same against the side of the post is prevented, the force of the blow struck upon the head of the pin being transmitted longitudinally of the fence post. In this manner it. will be seen that the post can be driven true and straight into the ground.
In the accompanying drawing Ihave illus trated a modification of the fence post which is provided upon its periphery with wire engaging lugs or hooks indicated at 3. In order that these wire securing hooks may not interfere with the proper application of the sleeve 6 to the upper end of the post I also provide the inner wall of said sleeve at its lower end with a longitudinally tapering recess 4 which is designed to receive the upper wire engaging hook upon the post. I am therefore enabled to apply my invention to the several forms of metallic fence posts now in general use.
From theforegoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is believed that the construction, man-. ner of use and several advantages of my invention will be clearly and fully understood.
The device is exceedingly simplein its construction, may be easily and quickly ranged in position for use and can be manu factured at very small cost. a
It will of course be understood that while I have shown and described the preferredform and construction of the several parts, the invention is susceptible of considerable modification therein and I reservethe privilege of resorting to: all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and; scope e f-the. appended claims.
Having-thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. The herein described driving cap for fence posts including a driving pin having a. cylindrical shank adapted to be engaged in the upper end of a hollow post, saidshank being provided with an enlarged head for seating engagement upon the upper edge of the post, a sleeve to receive the upper end of the fence post and the head of the driving pin, the shank ofsaid pin being of greater length than the sleeve, said sleeve being provided in its inner wall and at its upper end with a longitudinally disposed tapering recess and a wedge member adapted to be driven into said recess andcoiiperating with said sleeve and the head of the driving pin 'to lock the pin and sleeve together.
2. The herein described driving cap for "fence posts including a drivin pin having a cylindrical shank adapted to lie engaged in the upper end of a hollow post, said shank being provided with an enlarged head for seating engagement upon the upper edge of driven into said recess and cooperating with said sleeve and the head of the driven pin to lock the pin and sleeve together, the lower end of the sleeve also having a lon 'tudinally tapering recess in the inner wall t ereof.
