IMPROVEMENT IN TILTING CHAIRS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,629, dated July 4, 1871.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it knomr that we, CHARLES R. PETERS and WILLIAM P. TAYLOR, of San Francisco, in the county of Sen Francisco and State of California, have invented an improved oscillating chair for household purposes, churches, theaters, and other public buildings; and we do hereby declare tha-t the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being ha-d to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

This invention has for its object the production of a cheap and simple chair, adapted especially for theaters and churches, which may be inclined backward or forward at will 5 and consists in aY specic construction of the parts for uniting the moving' part ofthe chair with the stand or base, as will be fully described hereinafter.

In the drawings, Figine 1 represents a front elevation of the chair inclined forward. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the szune. Fig. 3 represents e sectional side elevation, with the chair inclined backward, and Fig. 4, a sectional elevation of the front legs and seat of the chair taken from the rear side.

Io enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe fully its construe` tion end operation.

A represents the base of the chair, which is provided with the side rails B in the usual manner, excepting that they are cut away at their ends in such manner as to form an inclined support, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. F represents the rest, which may be constructed solid or be provided with side rail F', to support a cover. It is, of course, provided with a back of proper form. The seat F is secured in place upon the base A by inea-11s of a plate, G', provided with a pin, G, which latter passes through an orifice in the plate D and rests in a slot, e, below. By means of plates Gr D, constructed as described, the seat isA eectually secured to the base without a rigid connection.

Having thus fully described our invention, what we do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the base A, having its rear portion inclined, and provided with the socketplate D, with the seat F, having the plate G constructed as described, as and for the purpose set forth.
