Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES NORMAN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO LEAH ANNA NORMAN,
OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CURTAIN-FIXTURES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,624, dated July 4, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES NORMAN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Curtain-Fixtures; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, ref erence heilig' had to the accompanying drawing' forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in mode of holding and adjusting Window-curtain cords 5` and consists in the ratchet-hook or bar, constructed, arranged, and operating as hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a front view ofthe article as applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of Fig. l taken on the line m w.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the window-casing. B is the ratchet-bar or fastening hook. C is the curtain-cord. I) is a screw inserted into the window-casing, with which the ratchet-teeth of the fastener B engage as seen in Fig. 2. The fastener may operate in contact with the casing, as seen in the drawing, or a plate may be attached to the casing. The said plate may have a lip or projection to engage with the teeth of the holder B, and any projecting knob may be inserted into the casing instead of the screw.
In this example of my invention the teeth occupy but a portion of the Width of the holder, thus entirely concealing the teeth from view; but I do not confine myself to this particular arrangement, as the teeth may extend entirely across the bar. The cord may be attached to the bar by means of a hook or projection, as seen, or in any other manner.
I design to make these ratchet cord-holders of glass, as they may be made cheaper and more ornamental of glass than of metal. I do not, however, confine myself to any particular form or finish, nor to any particular material.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The fastening-hook or ratchet-bar B and holdin g-screw D, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein shown and described.
The above specification ofmy invention signed by me this 29th day of May, 1871.
Witnesses: JAMES NORMAN.
` GEORGE W. MAEEE,
T. B. MosHER.
