HEATING CURTAIN. APPLICATION FILED FEB. I6. I9I5.

BARKER E. KIGANS, 0F MARIETTA, OHIO.
HEATING-CURTAIN.
Application filed February 16, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BARKER E. KIGANS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marietta, in the county of Washington and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Heating-Curtains, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a heating curtain for use in connection with gas or other burners, and which is so adapted to be arranged in a fire place to present a neat and eective appearance and aid in distributing or radiating heat from the flame of the burner.
rlhe invention contemplates, amongother features, the provision of a curtain which f is preferably made of sheet asbestos and con veniently cut or formed in a size which will permit of its being accommodated in a fireplace. The curtain is preferably formed in strips and, being made of asbestos, the curtain, when subjected to the heating action of the Haine of a burner, will tend to radiate and impart the heat to the room in which the fire-place `is located, while at the same time the curtain, when heated by the flame of the burner, will present aneat and effective appearance.
,In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure l is a front elevation of the fireplace, showing the curtain arranged therein; and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1. y
Referring more particularly to the views, I disclose a lire-place 10 having the usual back 11 and in which is arranged a preferably horizontal tubular burner 12 connecting with a suitable gas supply 13, the flame from the burning gas issuing from the burner 12 being indicated by the numeral 14. The curtain, indicated by the numeral 15, is preferably formed of a single piece of asbestos, more particularly sheet asbestos, and which, folded at its medial portion, has its sides cut to provide a series of strips 1G, the medial solid portion 17 of the curtain having suitable clamps 18 attached thereto and which may also encircle a horizontal Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cen Specification of Letters Patent.

supporting bar 19 extending throughout the length of the curtain beneath its medial solid portion, with the ends of the bar projecting and secured to the back 11 of the fire-place by hangers 20, the clamps 18 being also secured to the back of the re-place to support the curtain in a depending position as shown, with the burner arranged beneath the curtain and preferably below and between the sides thereof so that the ame of the burner, issuing up between the sides, will permit of the heat passing between the strips and thus heating a large area of the curtain so that the heat can radiate through the room. Inasmuch as the flame received between the sides of the curtain cannot readily pass between the strips, a large amount of the heat produced by the iiame will strike downward upon the hearth in front of the re-place and thus radiate still another portion of the heat through the room.
With a curtain of the character described, it has been found that a larger amount of heat can be produced in conjunction with a gas burner such as mentioned than with the usual gas logs or the like now generally used, the same quantity of gas being consumed in each instance. Thus it will be clear that the invention, aside from the neat and effective appearance which it will present when in use, will work a saving of fuel whether used in conj notion with a gas burner or some other kind of fuel-consuming burner adapted for the purpose of heatin rooms and the like.
aving thus described my invention, I claim:
The combination with a fire place, of a burner located in the fire place, a horizontal bar in the fire place and supported on the back thereof, and in spaced relation to said fire place, said bar being disposed above said burner, and an inverted V-shaped sheet of asbestos formed with strips and suspended from said bar in spaced relation to said burner.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BAKKER E. KIGANS.
