ROBERT P. BALSTON, OF NEW CONCORD,
POPPER, TOASTER, AND-BAKER corrisrnnn. i
V bined, of which the following is. a specifi- 7 combined; second, to provide a device for cation. 1
My invention relates to improvements in poppers, toasters and bakers and has for its objects, first, to provide a device in which the'above mentioned utensils, complete, are
the purposes mentioned, with a compact bottom which prevents the open flame of the gasolene, gas, or coal fire from coming in direct contact with the articles placed there in, and thereby avoids scorching or burning the same, and the absorbmg of fumes, from the flame, as is the case with other devices of this nature now in use; and, third, to
provide-a baker and toaster that will prevent the articles placed therein from coming in contact with the hot smooth bottom, and thereby avoid scorching or burning of the same. I attain these objects by the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 1s a view in perspective of the complete devlce when arranged as a corn vated; Fig. 3, a view in perspective of the complete device when arranged as a baker and toaster; Fig. 4, a vertical section of the device on the line, 2, 2, Fig. 8, representing the lid reversed and partly elevated; Fig. 5, a sectional view of the frame .of the lid 7 showing the method of securingthe wire mesh in said frame; Fig. 6, a view in perspective of the detachable handle, and, Fig.
i 7, a vertical section of the detachable wooden rolls, 12, 12, which extend. across each end at thebottom and form a base on which the Specification of Letters Patent.

reversible lid rests. The edges of the sides, 1, 1, are rendered rigid and smooth by the folds, 7, 7 The reversible lid consists of a metallic frame, 13, rendered sulficiently firm by a double fold, which firmly secures the wire mesh, 2, in said frame, and also, secures the metal strips, 6, 6, which together with the metal rolls, 12, 12, forms the ends of the complete device. The parts, 12, 12, are secured to the bottom of the device'by rivets, 15, 15.
The rod, 3, passing through the metal roll, 14, and the slots, 4, 4, forms the sliding hinge on which the reversible lid operates. The slots, 4, 4, extend the entire length of the vertical sides, 1, 1, with a curve at one ing said lid and it drops into position as shown in Fig. 3, converting the device into a baker and toaster, and the wire mesh, 2,
which forms a part of the lid, now serves as a grill on which to place the articles to be toasted or baked. The detachable wooden handle, Fig. 6, is provided with a slot, 16, which admits the metal handle, 8, and is firmly; held in place by the steel spring, 17 which passes through the openings, 18, and 9, in the respective parts of the handle. The wooden part of the handle protects the hand from the heat of the metallic part, and may be easily removed and re-attached when necessary. The metallic part, 8, of the handle, is made of sheet metal, and rendered sufficiently rigid by the folds, 10, 10, and is riveted to the bottom of the device by rivets,
This device can be used either over the open fire or by placing in the heated oven of the ordinary cooking stove.
It will be seen that my invention is simple and inexpensive in construction, and strong and durable in its several uses.
l/Vhat I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent is- In a device of the character described, having a rectangular body, with hinged lid, and metallic handle, said body comprising vertical sides and open ends excepting metallic rolls across said ends, said vertical sides having slots out longitudinal 1y therein, device to the'other, thereby reversing and extending the entire length thereof and inverting said lid, substantially as described. curving downward at one end, said lid being constructed with vmetallic frame and V i R T B Q wire mesh interior and a rod Which operates Witnesses:
in said'longitudinal slots, by means of which. a WALTER TURNER,
said rod can be moved from one end'of said W. L. SHAFER.
