Description
CHARLES H. SCHRODER,
BOILER-FURNACE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 24, 1915.
Application led February 3, 1915. Serial No.` 5,929.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES I-I. SGHRODER, of Burlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boiler- Furnaces; and I do hereby declare the f ollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in steam boiler furnaces, the object of the invention being to so construct aA furnace of this type that the combustion chamber shall be contained within the boiler and to so arrange the flues as to insure a proper circulation in the lower as well as in other parts of the boiler.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a boiler furnace embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is a front elevation partly broken away, and Fig. 3 is a rear elevation partly in section.
1 represents a boiler in which a furnace 2 is located. The heads 3-4 of the boiler are braced by tie-rods 5 extending through the boiler from one head to the other. In rear of the rear head Ll, a smoke chamber 6 is located. The smoke chamber is constructed with walls of masonry formedv partly cylindrical in shape and inclosed by a circular shell 7 having a diameter approximately the same as that of the boiler 1. The wall of the smoke chamber is braced by a circular angle iron ring 8 and transverse angle bars, 9. A suitable cleaning door 9EL is provided in i the lower portion of the back wall of the nace chamber somewhat in advance of the rear head 11 and between this bridge wall and the forward end of the furnace, grates 15 are suitably located in the latter.
F lues 16 extend from the rear furnace head 11 to the rear boiler head 3,-said flucs communicating at their forward ends with. the rear chamber 17 formed between the bridge wall and the rear furnace head, and said flues communicating at their rear ends with the smoke chamber G. Longer flues 18 communicate at their rear ends with the upper .portion of the smoke chamber 6 and, extending forwardly through the boiler, communicate with a smoke box 19 at the base of a stack 20.
My improvements afford a boiler furnace of minimum height and at the same time insure great etliciency. The products of combustion leaving the fire chamber and entering the rear furnace chamber 17, flow through the fines 16 to the smoke chamber 6, and from the latter. the smoke and products of combustion flow through the fines 18 to the .smoke box 19 and finally find an exit through the stack 20. The furnace chamber and all the ilues will be surrounded with water, and the smoke and products of combustion passing through the numerous short Hues from the rear end of the furnace to the smoke chamber 6, will so heat the water in the bottom portion of the boiler as to insure proper circulation of the water in the boiler and keep the whole of the water at approximately a uniform temperature.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
A boiler furnace comprising a cylindrical shell having front and rear heads, an inner shell disposed within the boiler shell above the bottom thereof and extending rearwardly more than half way through said boiler shell, said furnace shell provided at its rear end with a head and provided at its front end with doors, a bridge wall within said furnace shell coperating with the rear head of the latter to form a chamber, a grate within said furnace chamber, a rear smoke chamber having walls of masonry behind the rear head of the boiler shell and provided with a cleaning door, a forward 0F BURLINGTON, IOWA, ASSIGNOR TO MURRAY IRON WORKS COMPANY, OF BURLINGTON, IOWA.
