UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SEBASTIAN RUNSER, OF SHARON, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOILER-FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 489,753, dated November 4, 1890.
Applioationled April 4, 1890- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SEBASTIAN RUNsER, of Sharon, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boiler-F urnaces and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
It is the object of my invention to construct a furnace for heating a boiler in which the dame, heat, and waste products of. combustion will be utilized to their maximum extent in heating the boiler, and it is my object, also, to provide a simple construction of furnace for this purpose. Y
The invention consists of the ordinary boiler and outer furnacewall, with the lirechamber extending through the same, said parts being combined with an inner chimney or iiue-wall extending a short distance along the boiler from the fire-chamber, at a slight distance from the boiler to form a continuation of the fire-chamber, to direct and coniine the products of combustion against the boiler.
In the drawings, Figure lis a central vertical section of the furnace, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line o: of Fig. 1.
The general construction of the furnace is that of the well-known Hazleton boiler-f urnace.
The boiler A is vertically arranged within the main wall B. The lire-chambers D extend through the main Walls and open at their inner ends in close proximity to the boilershell which extends across the openings. In
order to confine the products of combustion in contact with the boiler after impinging thereagainst, and to forni a continuation of the ire-chamber in the form of a flue, an inner chimney or flue-wall E is built up from the boiler-wall, and this extends up a short distance, so that the heat, dame, and smoke Serial No. 346,529l (No model.)
willhave to pass through the lue-space within the chimney. The chimney above the firechamber is separate from the main wall by the space F. At the inner end of the chamber Dis placed a bridge d, the inner face of which is in line With the inside of the chimney-flue. This bridge prevents the fuel, While burning, from coming in direct contact with the boiler-shell. The grate extends entirely through the fire-chamber tothe boilershell, and the bridge, as before stated, keeps the fuel away from the inner ends of the grate-bars.
I claim as my inventionl.' In combination, the main furnace-Wall forming a heating-chamber in which is located the boiler, the fire-chamber extending through the main Wall to near the boiler, and the inner chimney extending upwardly from the inner end of the fire-chambers a short distance so as to direct and ,confine the heat in proximity to the boiler, said chimney opening at the top into the main space, substantially as described.
2. In combination, the boiler, the main furnace-wall, the tire-chamber extending through the same, the inner chimney-Wall extending up a short distance from the fire-chamber, the grate extending through the fire-chamber to the boiler-shell, and the bridge d, extending across the grate at a short distance from the inner end thereof, substantially as described. i
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SEBASTIAN RUNSER. Witnesses:
A. W. WILLIAMS, JOHN MCCLURE.
