SALO H. LOUIS, or NEW YORK, N.
INSECT-POWDER CONTAINER AND SPRINKLER.
Application filed September 16, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SALO I-I. LoUIs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Insect Powder Container and Sprinkler, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to devices for con taining a sprinkling powder such as insect powder and the like, although the device is well adapted for discharging various materials in powdered form.
An object of the invention is the provision of an improved container and sprinkler of the above character which embodies top and bottom sections connected in a novel manner to a flexible lateral section or body and normally held distended by an interior spring seated in a novel manner within said top and bottom sections, while the top is provided with a spout or other outlet through which the material or powder is discharged.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention resides more particularly in the peculiar combination and arrangement of parts which will be illustrated as preferred embodiments in the accompanying drawings and described in the specification.
Reference is to be had tothe accompany,-
ing drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all. the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of an insect powder container and sprinkler constructed in accordance with the invention, part of the device being shown in section; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a modified form of attaching means for the lateral section; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device showing a furthermodified form ofattaching means for the lateral section and modified arrangements of top and bottom or end sections.
In Fig. 1 of thedrawings my improved powder container and sprinkler, illustrated as designed for containing insect powder, consists of a lateral section or body 10 of flexible water and readily stilf distensible and air-proof material, such as gimp muslin, leather cloth, rubberized cloth or leatherette, the same being attached to the ends or top and bottom sections 11 and 12, respectively. As shown, the top section consists Specification of Letters Patent.

, of a screw cap in which the upper end of the lateral section is engaged and held by an interiorly engaging clamping sleeve 13 which has an inwardly extending flange 14 clamping against the re-bent portion 15 of the adjacent end of the lateral section, the screw threads serving to firmly secure the lateral section between the parts thus secured together. The clamping sleeve 13 depends considerably below the screw cap proper, as shown at 16, thus reinforcing the lateral section at its point of connection to the top of the container, thereby preventing mutilation or cutting of the lateral section at such point.
The bottom section embodies a screw cap within which the lower end of the lateral section is engaged and held by a clamping band 17 threaded into the cap and having a flanged portion 18 contacting with an adjacent re-bent portion 19 of the bottom end of the lateral section. It will be observed that the band 17 projects slightly above the edge of the cap proper sufficient to permit the lateral section to flex outwardly the same as at the upper end and prevent mutilation or tearing of the lateral section at the bottom. A coiled spring 20, or other distending means, is fitted within the con tamer, the spring in the present instancebeing practically of the same diameter as that of the container and having its lower end 21 engaged with the flange 18 which forms a seat for the spring while the upper end portion 22 of the spring engages the flange 15 which forms a corresponding seat for the spring, whereby the lateral section is prevented from collapsing and the top and bottom sections spaced apart before and after the container is filled with the powder.
As constructed, the device is very similar to an ordinary bellows and may be compressed against the action of the spring so that the latter will expand automatically and permit further discharge or sprinkling of the powder by compressing the container. In order to discharge the powder a spout or outlet- 23 is provided, such spout being shown as fixed to the cap of the top portion 11 in an inclined position but relatively near the edge thereof, so that each time the container is compressed against the action of the spring, the pressure within the container will be increased to cause the discharge of the powder in a blast.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 2 of thedrawings, the lateral section and spout are the same, but in lieu of securing the lateral section between the clamping sleeves and the screw cap at the top and the clamping band and screw cap at the bottom, such clamping sleeve and band are secured directly to the caps and the lateral sections glued or otherwise attached to the-interior 1 portions of the band and sleeve, as shown In the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 3'of the drawings, the caps which may be formed of metal, pasteboard or other suitablemateriah consist of a top cap 25, between which and the sleeve 26 the lateral section is glued or otherwise secured, such 1 parts having smooth faces in contra-distincthe sleeve 26 and the band 28.
tion to the screw-threaded engagement of the parts heretofore described. lhe bottom of the container in this form of the invention'consists of a cap 27, between which and a band 28 the lower end of the lateral sec- 7 tion is glued or fastened, and it will be obcharge the contents of the container.
tamer.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is a 1. An insect powder container and sprinkler, comprising a lateral section of flexible material forming a body, a top for said body, said top including a cap with one end of the lateral section fitted therein, a clamping sleeve securing said lateral section in the cap and projecting beyond the lower edge thereof, said cap and sleeve being threaded together with the lateral section therebetween, a bottom for said container, said bottom including a cap in which the opposite end of the lateral section is retained, a clamping band securing said lateral section in the last named cap and projecting beyond the top edge thereof, said last named cap and band being threaded together with the lateral section therebetween, an expansible spring within the container and engaging said top and bottom sections and a tapered spout carried by the top'in an inclined position nearits edge portion so as to'dispose the discharge end thereof substantially in alinement with the lateral wall of the con- 2. An insect powder container and sprinkler,-comprising alateral section of flexible material forming a body, a top for said body, said top including a cap with one end of the lateral section fitted therein, a clamping sleeve securing said lateral section in the cap and projecting beyond the lower edge thereof, said cap and sleeve being threaded together with the lateral section therebetween, a bottom for said container, said bottom including a cap in which the opposite end of the lateral section is retained, a clamping band securing said lateral section in the last named cap and projecting beyond the top edge thereof, said last named cap and band being threaded together with the lateral section therebetween, said top having a discharge opening therein near its edge portion and a distending member for the lateral section positioned between the top and bottom portions of the container.
3. A powder container and sprinkler of the class described, comprising top and bottom portions each formed of two sections, each portion having an outer section and an inner section projecting beyond the edges of the outer section in opposite directions, a flexible body held between each pair of sections at its ends, said projecting portions permitting outward flexing of the body but preventing mutilation thereof, a coiled spring mounted in the body and engaging the inner sections at the ends of the container to normally distend the latter and adapted to be compressed for discharging the contents thereof and an outlet for the container.
4. An insect powder container and sprinkler comprising a lateral section of flexible waterand air-proof material forming a body, a top for said body, said top including a cap with one end of the lateral section fitted therein, 'a clamping sleeve securing said lateral section in the cap and projecting beyond the edge thereof, said cap and sleeve being threaded together with the lateral section therebetween, a bottom for said container, said bottom including a cap in which the opposite end of the lateral section is retained, a clamping band securing said lateral section in the last-named cap and projecting beyond the edge of said cap, said last-named cap and band being threaded together with the lateral section therebetween,
said cap having a discharge opening therein near its edge portion, and an elastic member for maintaining said flexible body taut.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of 7 two subscribing witnesses.
SALO H. LOUIS.
