LOOKING MEANS FOR LOOSE-LEAF BINDERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 15, 1915.
Application filed February 24, 19-13. Serial N 0. 750,133.
To all whom it may concern: i
Be it known that I, EDWARD V. BURNS, a States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, inthe county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Looking Means for Loose-Leaf Binders; and I do hereby declare; that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, andto the numbers of reference marked thereon, specification.
This invention relates to that class of locking means used in connection with. loose leaf binders, for example, times called transfer binders, comprising a binding platehaving impaling' posts thereon which project through a clamping plate parallel with the binding plate, and on which the leaves of the book are engaged. Such locking mechanisms have assumed" many different forms, many of which are complicated and expensive to manufacture, and also, are likely to get out of order or break,
when consisting of a number of parts, thus rendering the binder useless until repair. It is an object of this invention to afi'ord :an exceedingly strong locking mechanism whereby the clamping plate isrigidlylo'cked upon the impaling posts and firmlyheld thereon until released by the operator. It is alsoan object of this invention to afford a rocker locking'mechanism for'each impaling post adapted to be actuated by. a sliding member. 7 1
It is furthermore an object of this invention to provide means for engaging around posts to prevent withdrawal of the same fromthe slots in the clamping plate and the rocker mechanism therein.
It is also an object ofthis invention to afford loosely engaged rocking mechanisms, which, when moved into one extreme position, serve to 'bind firmly on an .impaling post, "and-when moved in.v the opposite extreme position, will permit the .impaling post toslidetherethrough. Y
It; is J also \an object of this invention to afford locking means adapted to bindon the impaling-post'and actuatable by a sliding spring member shiftable on opposite sides of the center of movement of said looking meang a a a which form a part of this of the class some:
is theactuating button object of this invention to in which the rocking, bind- It is also an provide a device mg mechanisms are pivot-ally supported on spring plates.
It is finally an object of this invention to provide a device comprising a few number of parts of durable construction, and capable of being cheaply and easily manufactured. I l V The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings,'and hereinafter more fully described. 7
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary top plan view of a loose leaf binder enlarged detail section 'showlng one of-the rocker elements in release. position. Fig. 6 is a similar view showing'the rocker element intlocked position. Fig. 7 isa section on line 7-7 of Fig. 4, showing an end elevation of the rocker mechanism in release position. Fig. 8 is a fragmentary View showing the shape of the bearing plate element.
As shown inthe drawings: The reference numeral 1, indicates the binding plate in which are. rigidly secured the lmpaling posts 2.
The numeral 3, designates the clamping plate having the laterally directedslots 4, therein, and each of said plates 1. and 3, is shown as suitably covered with a cloth or fabric 5,.which serves to connect said plates with the extended covers of the binder. The cover plate 6, comprises a strip of metal folded casing to inclose the working mechanism, and the ends 7, thereof are extended through apertures in the clamping plate and flanged over at 8, thereby securing said casing 6, rigidly upon the top of said casing 6, is provided withalOngitudinal slot 9, and projecting therethrough andsecured in the. arched sliding spring 10, 11,-the amplitude of over on each of its edges to afford a I same. The upper faceor movementof said spring 10, being limited by the length of said slot 9. Said sliding spring member or plate 10, is provided at one end with an inwardly directed longitudinal slot, of which the extension 12, of said plate forms one side. Said extension 12, is directed upwardly, the change in curvature thereof from that of the plate 10, occurring at the sharp edged indenture 13. The opposite end of said plate 10, is also slotted to afford the hook member 14:, the outer end thereof being caused to bend upwardly, duetoa change in curvature efiected at the sharp edged indenture 15, similar to the construction described at the opposite end of said plate. Thus it will be seen from the construction described that the plate 10, whenndetached from the casing normally arches downwardly on each side of the. actuating button 11 asshown by the shading in Fig. 3. Beyond the ends of said curvature said plate is reversely bent to cause the extremities to bear upwardly. The resilient plate member 10, when assembled together with the casing onthe clamping plate 3, of the binder is held inan upward and flattened position against the cover plate 6,
V by the rocker elements 16.
The locking or binding members which are adapted to grip the impaling posts 2, consist of the slightly angled strip of metal 16, which is provided oneach side thereof, and centrally, with the downwardly extending tongues, which are narrowed at their extremities 17 to afford the downwardly di rected bearing faces 18. Said rocking element 16, is provided on one end with the downwardly directed stop 19, which serves to limit the upward movement of that porextending tion on the other side'of the center to a substantially horizontal position, which will permit the impaling posts to slide freely through the apertures or slots 20, in said portion of the rocking element. Said rocking element is suitably mounted in the clamping plate 3, with the extremities 17,
plate, and the each side of the recesses 21, in bearing plate '22, which lies across and between said apertures in the clamping plate 3. The clamping plate 3, and the cover plate 6, are each provided with the alined slots 23 and 2 respectively, and the slots 20, in the rocking members are also alined therewith when said locking members are in release position. Thus it will be seen that when the locking members are in release position the upper, cover, and clamping plate 3, of the vbinder may slide out of engagement with the impaling posts.
The operation is as follows: When the device is assembled the indentures 13 and 15, respectively, of the spring plate 10, bear upon the rocking members 16,- and when in the position shown in Fig. 5, 'the'pressure ing-the patent 1 ed to close across ing member's.
downwardly in apertures in said bearing faces 18, resting upon bers having recesses of the spring being exerted on one side of the center of the rocking member, serves to elevate the same into release position, while ing lateral 'movement' of the cover of the binder out of engagement therewith. Thus two locking effects areefi'ected; namely, the one in which the rocking members serve to bind or grip the impaling-posts to prevent upward or downward movement thereon,
andthe closing of the recesses 24:, by-means 1 of the extensions 25, thus retaining the impaling posts therewithin to prevent transverse movement relative thereto.
- Iam aware that details of the construction are open to wide variation without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limitgranted otherwise than necessitatedby the ,prior art. I
I claim as my invention: 1 1 1. In a device of the class describedpivotally mounted locking members having recesses there n springplate adapted to actuate the same,
and an extension on said springplate adapt- 2. The combination with the impaling posts of a binder, of spring actuated pivoted locking members adapted to frictionally engage'said binding posts,-and means ad recesses in said locking members to prevent transverse movement relative said impaling posts;
3. The combination svith the iinp'aling posts of a binder, of pivoted locking mem- V therein to permit said binding posts to extend therethrough, and resilient sliding means adapted to bear on opposite sides of thecenterof said locking members to actuate the same into locking and unlocking position respectively. V
4. In a device of the class described the combinationwith the impaling posts of a binder,-of pivotally supported recessed locking members, bearing plates port therefor, and aresilieneslidin actuating member adapted to bear on said rocking members on the opposite sides of said pivoted.supporttherefor to actuate the same into locking and unlocking position respectively. 5 V
v In a device of the class described the to engage a binding post, a-
the recesses in said lockto retain the impalhaving recesses therein apted to close across the affording sup- 7 c said members engaging within the apertures of said clamping plate, a bearing plate lying between the tongues of each of said rocking members to afiord a support for said rocking members, and an actuating plate, adapt- Goples of this patent may be obtained for five rocking members having re-' ed to close across the recesses in said rocking members.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
