Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IGNACY WICHROWSKI AND JULIAN PIOTROWSKI, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
STEAM-GENERATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 7, 1910. Serial No. 580,878.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, IGNACY WICHROW- sxr and JULIAN PIOTROWSKI, both subjects of the Czar of Russia, and residents of New York, borough of Brooklyn, count of Kings, and cit-y and county of New ork, State of New York, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Generators, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to a generator adapted to produce a supply of superheated admixture of air and steam for operating mechanism of various classes under pressure.
Our invention has for its primary object to provide a device of this character which is used in conjunction with a furnace for generating a supply of steam charged with air and superheating the motive agent whereby power of an unusually high efficiency is obtainable for operatingmachinery under pressure or for other desired purposes at a great saving in cost of fuel and labor and a large increase in producing capacity.
Other objects of our invention is to provide a new and novel form of boiler having a steam generating chamber and a communieating superheating compartment; to pro-- vide means adapted to supplywater in vapor or spray form to the steam generating chamber; and to provide means adapted to charge the vapor within said chamber with air in desired proportions.
Further objects of the invention is to provide a chest .or box having a chamber therein which communicates with a flue of the furnace and b which the products of combustion there rom are utilized for drying the admixture of steam and air which is forced through a plurality of coils of pipes arranged within said chamber and by which the motive agent is converted to a high state of compressive efliciency when used for operating purposes.
With these and other objects in View, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification and will then be pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1, is a longitudinal vertical section on line Il[l.1 of Fig. 2 of one form of steam generator embodying our invention, and Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the generator, part of which is sectional.
The furnace 10 having a base-plate 11 and.
the supporting standards 12 and 13 may be of the usual type or any preferred form. Between the standards 12 and 13 is an ashp1t 14 supported in the upper part of which 1s a grate 15 and communicating with the furnace 10 is one end of a longitudinal flue 16.
A boiler 17 having an annular wall 18 and a bottom-plate 19 form the top inclosure for the furnace 10 and flue 16 so that the flame from a fire therein will play directly upon the underside of said bottom-plate. Upon the annular wall 18 is provided a topplate 19, thus forming a chamber20 interiorly of the boiler 17 and in which is generated the admixture of steam and air. The boiler 17 has an extension, as 21, which is pro ided by a top-plate having one end formed upon a part of the annular wall 18 and the opposite end thereof is integral with a flange or wall 22 extending upwardly adjacent to one end of the bottom-plate 19. Interiorly of the extension 21 is provided a compartment 23 which communicates with the generating chamber 20 by a substantially semi-circular opening, as 24, which is formed in the annular wall 18.
To dry the admixture of steam and air whereby the compressive efficiency will be increased for operating purposes upon the bedplate 11 is provided a chest or box 25 having a front wall 26, side walls 26 and 26', a rear wall 26 and a top-plate 27 at one end of which is a flue or outlet 28' leading to a chimney for carrying off the products of combustion. The interior of the chest 25 is employed as a dryingchamber 29 in which is arranged some distance from the front wall 26 a vertical battle-plate 30 having an opening in the upper part thereof, as 31, and at a distance from the rear wall 26 in said chamber is a second vertical battle-plate 32 having an opening, as 33, in the lower part thereof. By this arrangement a front passage 34 is provided between the front wall 26 and a battle-plate 30 and a passage 35 communicatingwith the flue 28 is formed between the rear wall 26 and bathe-plate 32. In the lower end of the front wall 26 of the chest 25 is an opening 36 by which communication is formed between the flue 16 and passage 34, thus the heat and products of combustion will be drawn from the fire in the furnace 10 through the flue 16, through the opening 31 of the battle-plate 30 into the drying chamber 29, through the opening 33 of the baflie-plate 32, through passage 35 and out through the flue 28.
Between the bafiie plates 30 and 32 is arranged a plurality of coils of pipes 37. The lower end of each coil of, the pipes 37 is connected to a steam head 38 provided inthe lower part at the rear of the drying chamber '29. The opposite end of each coil of said pipes is connected to a steam drum 39 arranged in the upper front part of the drying chamber 29, and to said drum is connected one end of an outlet pipe 39' in which is interposed a throttle or globe valve 39 adapted to control the passageof the motive agent for operating purposes. The admixture of steam and air is supplied to the steam head 38 through two pipes 40 and 41 which are disposed in parallel relation crosswise of the lower part of the drying chamber 29 through the baffle-plate 30 to and through the front wall 26 of the chest- 25 where the opposite ends thereof are screwed in threaded bosses 42 and 43 formed upon the top-plate of the boiler extension 21, and interposed in each of the pipes 40 and 41 is a check valve, as 44. Water is supplied under pressure to the boiler 17 from any suitable source of supply through pipe 45 by a pump of any desired form connected to the pipe 46.
As a means adapted to convert the supply of water into a form of vapor or spray for delivery into the steam generating chamber 20 upon the end of the water pipe 45 is connected the end of the tube 47 of a nozzle 48 arranged within said generating chamber.
To supply the generating chamber 20 with a desired proportion of air for charging the vapor simultaneous with its conversion to steam we provide a form of nozzle, as 60. There may be one, or a plurality of the nozzles 60 arranged Within said generating chamber and to each of which is forced air through the pipe, as 61, by any suitable form of air-pumpingmeans. It is clear that in supplying air. to the generating chamber 20 it willbe forced from the pipes 61, and out through the apertures 65. into the generating chamber 20. generating chamber 20 is filled with the adv mixture of steam and air it will be forced limiting ourselves thereto, as we are aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the principle or When the sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore we reserve to ourselves the right to make such changes as fairly fall Within the scope thereof.
