To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM F. HELL- BERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at McGregor, in the county of Clayt on and State of Iowa, have invented anew and useful Can; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact deprovide a simple, etficient and practical device of this design to facilitate the emptying or pouring of oil from an oil can, into a lamp or other vessel, so as to avoid spilling the liquid.

One of the features of the invention is the provision of such a funnel attachment having means for closing the can, when the funnel is closed, or inverted and arranged on the top of the can. M

Another feature is the provision of a member arranged on the interior of the can to which the funnel is attached and at an angle to the side of the can, thus forming a false bottom when the can is tilted, so that the entire contents of the can may be emptied.

The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown inathedrawings and claimed.

In the drawings :Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a can, with the funnel at tachment applied, showing the same in a closed position. Fig. 2' is a sectional view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view, showing the funnel open, with its outlet end inserted in another can, and showing the can to which the funnel is hingedly connected tilted. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view.

Referring to the drawings 1 designates a can adapted to contain oil or other liquid having a handle 2 and provided upon its interior with a member 3, arranged adjacent to and on an incline with relation to the side of 1 the can.

This member 3 constitutes means to permit the entire contents of the can to be entirely emptied without substantially turning the can up side down. The outlet mouth of the can is arranged considerably to one sideof the center of the can.' The member 3 inclines from the mouth 4 down- \vardly and to the side of the can, as shown.

E A handle 5, which is in'the form of a bail has its ends secured in the ears 6 of the can. The funnel attachment 7 which is the imain feature of the device is hinged at 8 "to the can 1, and when closed, is secured in :such position by the catch 9. This catch 9 Eis of considerable breadth, so as to engage 1 for some distance on each side of the funnel, in order to prevent lateral movement of the ;funnel relative to the can. The portion of -jthe catch 9 which engages the peripheral edge ofthe funnel is in the form of a resiliient curved lip, so as to allow the periphcral edge of the funnel to spring thereunder.

Arranged on the side of the funnel on the interior thereof is an offset 10, to which is attached a rubber cap or gasket 11, by means of a screw or rivet 12. This cap or gasket is Z provided for the urp'ose of closing the outl'et mouth 4 oft e can when the funnel is closed, as shown in Fig. 2. Secured between the head of the screwor rivet and the cap, is a galvanized iron or other metal washer or plate 13, so as to prevent tearing or disfiguring of the cap or gasket. The outlet mouth 4 is disposed to one side of the center of the can 1, in order to cause the liquid when emptying, to pour substantially through the center of the funnel, and not on the side of the same.

Fixed on the exterior of the funnel is a spring clip 14., to which tickets or the like are fastened. In selling oil from, a wagon, the purchaser may hold tickets, and one of these tickets may be secured to the clip, while the customer is waiting for the oil which has been purchased.

In emptying oil or other liquid from the can 1, the funnel is disengaged from the catch 9., and swung upon its hinge 8, while the can 1 is in an upright position. The funnel is then inserted in the can 15, and subsequently, by taking hold of the handle 2, the can is tilted as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3.

The drawings discloses only one form of the invention, but in practical fields this form may necessitate alterations. to which the patentee is entitled provided the altera tions are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.

The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is:

1. In combination, a can having an outlet mouth arranged to one sideof the center,

the can having on its interior a member arranged on an incline from the mouth to the side of the can, in order to permit the entire contents thereof to empty,' without entirely inverting the can, a funnel hinged to the top of the can and provided with an offset on the interior thereof, and a rubber cap secured to the ofiset adapted to fit the outlet end of the can, when the funnel is inverted on the top of the can.

2. In combinatioma can having an' outlet mouth arranged to one side of the center, the can having its interior member arranged on an incline from the mouth to the side of the can, inorder to permit the entire, contents thereof to empty,-without entirely inverting the can, a funnel hinged to the top of the can and provided with an olfset on the interior thereof, and a rubber cap secured to the offset adapted to fit the outlet end of the can, when the funnel is inverted on the top of the can, and a catch on the can to hold the funnel inverted, the catch havmg a broad resilient lip to engage the peripheral edge of the funnel for some distance on each side, to prevent lateral movement of the funnel. I

3. In combination, a can having an outlet mouth disposed to one side of the center, a

funnel hinged to thetop of the can and provided with an offset on the interior of the side of the can, a rubber .cap riveted 'to-the ofl'set adapted to engage the outlet mouth when the funnel is inverted on the top of the can, and a plate arranged between the rivet and the cap to prevent disfiguring of the same.
