Description
W. H. RODDEN. Stopper for Cans.
No. 237,446. v Patented Feb. 8, 1881.
Witnesses: Inventor:
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
WILLIAM H. RODDEN, OF TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA.
SLI'OPPER FOR CANS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,446, dated February 8, 1881.
Application filed January 21, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY Bon- DEN, of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented an Improved Stopper for Oans and other Vessels and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification Figure 1 being a side view of the neck of a can provided with my improved stopper. a part being in central vertical section, the position of the stopper being as when the spout and vent-aperture are opened thereby; Fig. 2, a horizontal section of the neck of the can below the stopper and looking upward, showing the improved stopper in position for closing the spout and vent-aperture.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in both figures.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the neck of a can, and B the spout thereof. Through the side of the neck, preferably opposite to the outlet into the spout, an air-vent aperture, to, is formed. The stopper 0 fits into the neck of the can, generally a little tapering, as an ordinary plug-stopper, closing the same tight, and has a suitable flattened or equivalent form of head or thumbpiece, b, above the neck of the can to turn it by. I form channels or openings 0 d in opposite sides of its lower end, extending upward above the outlet f into the spout B and above the ventaperture to. v I a The form of the channels may be rounded, as shown, triangular, flattened, or any other most convenient or as preferred. One or both channels should be large enough to afford sufficient room for the discharge of the liquid through it but if always used in connection with the ventaperture one may be much smaller than that. Yet, for convenience in general use, to avoid the necessity of always turning the stopper in one direction for opening or closing the spout, it is best to make both channels of the full size required for discharging the liquid. The direction of the flattened head I) of the stopper is arranged to indicate the opening position when it'is in a plane with the spent, and the closing position when it is at right angles thereto.
Thus my improved stopper, while it is quite as convenient as an ordinary stopper, is perwith knots thereon at short distances apart,)
to the stopper by a ring, h, passing around a grooved neck of the stopper, or equivalent means, and this chain takes into a spring hook or catch, E, formed as shown, or in any other equivalent manner attached to the can neck or body. The chain is arranged in the hookcatch so as to draw slightly on the stopper by the elasticity of the hook or catch, thereby keeping it close in the neck of the can. The chain may remain thus hooked as long as the can is in use for drawing out liquid therefrom; but when the stopper is to be removed for replenishing the can the chain is readily detached from the hook or catch and again replaced, when the stopper is again inserted in the can-neck.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with the neck of a can or vessel provided with a spout, B, and ventaperture a in opposite sides thereof, a turning stopper, 0, provided with channels 0 d, reaching from the bottom of the same above the said spout-outlet and vent-aperture, and separated by a tight partition, and a chain, D, swiveled to the said stopper and attached to the can-neck, so as to hold the one closely in the other, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
2. The spring hook or catch E on the can, in combination with the turning stopper 0 and holding-chain D, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
The foregoing specification signed by me this 15th day of November, 1879.
WILLIAM HENRY RODDEN.
