STATEZATENT FREDERICK GEORGE DODSHON, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OE ONE-HALF TO DETROIT OVERALL COMPANY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
COMBINED PATCH AND SWING POCKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 30, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK G. Don- SHON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Patch and Swing Pockets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
In the arrangement of side pockets for garments for working men it is difficult to provide retaining means which prevent the contents of the pockets from falling out if the wearer of the garment is stooping over or the pocket becomes inverted.
This invention relates to pockets in garments and more particularly to an arrangement thereof whereby the contents of the pocket is retained even when the pocket is inverted.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan View of a pocket that embodies features of the invention together with the adjacent portion of the garment; Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section through the pocket; and Fig. 3 is an edge view of the pocket showing the position it assumes when inverted.
In general terms the pocket is a combined patch and swing pocket. The body of the pocket is formed of a piece of flexible fabric 1 that is secured by suitable stitching 2 along its upper end and by a line of stitching 3 part way down one side edge of the pocket to the outer side of the garment 4., A portion of the pocket below the vertical stitching 3 is folded on itself, the lateral margins 5 being secured together in the usual manner by stitching 6. The upper edge 7 of the inner or back portion of the pocket is stitched as indicated at 8 directly to the garment. This leaves an opening or mouth extending down part of one side of the pocket opposite the stitching 3. By this arrangement any article placed in the pocket, as for example, a watch indicated at 9, cannot work out readily as the lower portion or swinging part of the pocket tends to fall away from the body of the garment and fold back against the patch portion of the pocket as indicated in Fig. 3 showing the pocket in inverted position.
By running a line of stitching indicated at 10, down the face of the patch parallel to stitching 3 and omitting that portion of the stitching 2 which holds the margins of the patch to the garment between the lines 10 and 3 of the stitching, a regular patch pocket may be formed in addition for bolding small articles.
Obviously changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and I do not care to limit myself to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
What I claim as my invention is A combined patch and swing pocket for a garment comprising a piece of flexible fabric stitched along its upper margin and upper portion of one edge to the outer face of the garment, the lower portion of said piece being folded on itself and stitched together along its side margins, with the upturned side of the folded part against the face of the garment and its upper edge secured by stitching thereto.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK GEORGE DODSHON.
