PIPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1912.
Application filed June 10, 1911. Serial No. 632,457.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, DANIEL IV. WOMAOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prescott, in the county of Yavapai and State of Arizona, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to tobacco pipes and particularly to a pipe of this type wherein an improved smoke passage or vent has been devised.
It is my object to provide a pipe, the cleaning of which will be greatly facilitated by a departure from the old type of stem.
Another object of my invention is to provide a pipe which will be simple, durable and economical of manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in View my invention consists in such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawing in which like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which,
Figure 1 is a side ,elevation of my invention disclosed in section. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the bowl and main stem. Fig. 3 is a detail to be referred to. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of my invention. Fig. 5 is a cross-seetional view of my invention.
Referring to the drawing 1 designates the usual bowl which is preferably made in one piece with the main stem 2. The main stem 2 is hollowed out for the reception of an auxiliary stem 3 which is removable and contains a slot 4: in the under surface thereof for a purpose which will presently appear. The auxiliary stem 3 is ap proximately round in cross-section having one side 5 relatively flat practically the whole length thereof which is designed to provide a passage 6 between the inner wall of the main stem 2 and the auxiliary stem. The passage 6 has communication to the bowl 1 through an aperture 7. A mouth piece 8 is preferably formed on the outer end of the auxiliary stem 3 which contains the usual smoke aperture 9 turned upwardly at 10 to connect with the passage 6 thereby completing the duct from the bowl to the mouth piece.
Upon referring to the drawing it will readily be seen that by rotation of the auxiliary stem 3 the side 5 may be brought into registry with the slot- 4: whereupon the collected spittle and juices may be removed with a cloth or article designed for this purpose. A cleaner may be passed through the aperture 9 and the whole is quickly and thoroughly cleaned.
A ring or band 11 of usual construction may surround the main stem 2 at its outer end for purposes well known.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be appreciated that I have devised a pipe of novel construction and immense utility which in every way attains the objects heretofore set forth.
I desire it to be understood that slight changes in construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention, provided such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a device of the character described, a pipe comprising a bowl, a stem attached to said bowl, said stem being provided with an elongated slot on its under side, an auxiliary stem revoluble within said first mentioned stem, said auxiliary stem having a portion thereof cut away, the interior of said first mentioned stem being circular in cross section, the base of the cut away portion of said auxiliary stem forming a chord to that circle for the purpose described.
DANIEL W. WOMACK.
