PIPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 12, 1906.
Application filed May 5, 1905. Renewed May 18, 1906. Serial N01 317,62A.
and JULIUs FERNANDEZ, citizens of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipes; and we do declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in tobacco-pipes and it consists in the construction and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of our invention is to provide a pipe with means to arrest the spittle and prevent it from reaching the pipe-bowl and to also prevent the passage of the nicotin to the user of the pipe.
The accompanying drawing is a sectional view of a pipe provided with our improvements.
The pipe 1 may be of any suitable form and construction. Its stem 2 has a detachable mouthpiece 3. At the point where the stem and mouthpiece are coupled together the same are formed with a chamber 4, in which is placed a receptacle 5 of suitable form to fit therein, having its lower end closed and having its upper end open. A suitable passage 6 extends lengthwise of the said receptacle over the same, and the said receptacle is so disposed that it serves to collect the spittle, and thereby keep the pipe-bowl dry, and also serves to collect the nicotin, so that the latter is prevented from reaching the mouth of the user.
By forming the chamber 4 in the meeting ends of the stem and the detachable mouthpiece the receptacle 5 in said chamber is caused to extend across the joint between the stem and the mouthpiece, so that When the latter is detached the upper outer end of the receptacle 5 projects from the stem 2, hence facilitating the removal of the said receptacle when it is desired to cleanse the same. Furthermore, it will be observed that the upper side of the receptacle is shorter than the lower side thereof, so that it serves to interrupt the passage from the bowl of the pipe to the outer end of the mouthpiece and to facilitate the passage of fluid from said passage to the interior of said receptacle.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Having thus described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein described pipe having the mouthpiece detachably coupled to its stem,
the mouthpiece and the stem being each provided with a bore and with a counterbore, the said counterbores being at the meeting ends of the stem and mouthpiece to form a chamber at the point where'they are coupled and extending across the joint between them, the bore of the mouthpiece communicating with the upper side of the upper end of said chamber, and the receptacle fitted in and filling the said chamber, said receptacle being closed at the end nearest the pipe-bowl, open at the opposite, upper end, having its upper side shortened at said open upper end, and having a passage on its upper side extending from the bore of the stem to the shortened upper end of the receptacle, said shortened upper end of the receptacle forming a gap between the said passage and the bore of the mouthpiece, for the purpose set forth, said receptacle extending across the joint between the stem and the mouthpiece and project- WILLIAM J. HAYES. JULIUS FERNANDEZ.
