GLASS FASTENER.
APPLICATION FILED MAR.7,1911.
awe/MM CHARLES W. SEGO, OF IRA, IOWA.
GLASS-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1912.
Application filed March 7, 1911. Serial No. 612,783.
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. Snso, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ira, in .the county of Jasper and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Glass-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to glass fasteners and more particularly to that type of device which is used to fasten the panes of window glass in the sashes without the use of putty.
The object of the invention is the provision of a metallic glass fastener which is simple, cheaply constructed and eflicient for holding the panes of glass within the sash and against rattling.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of the device shown applied to a window frame. Fig. 2'is a sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the blank. Fig. 4 is a detail section of the device removed from the frame and showing the blank bent into position ready to engage the sash.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents the ordinary sash having the rabbet 2 formed therein for the reception of the pane of glass, which is indicated at 3. The attaching device comprises a flat metallic plate 4: which is bent upon the line ac-zv to bring its separate sides 5 and 6 into parallelism the opposite sides edges of the blank being provided with the prongs 7 and S. The prongs 7 are pointed and eX- tend in line with the side to which they are attached, and the prongs 8 have squared or rounded ends which are turned off from their normal line at an angle, as shown at 9. The prongs 8 also gradually diverge from the prongs 7, the divergence starting at their juncture with the side 6.
In placing the device in position, the bent ends 9 of the prongs 8 are inserted beneath the glass and the plate pressed up against the side of the pane and then forced downwardly so as to cause the prongs 7 to enter the outer wall of the rabbet and the prongs 8 to bend on their line of juncture with the plate and slide beneath the glass.
It will be noticed that when the glass is in position the prongs 8 being sufliciently malleable to permit the operation just described, the prongs 7 will prevent outward.
movement of the plate while the prongs 8 will prevent the prongs 7 from becoming disengaged from the wood. When the device is painted and forced into tight engagement with the glass, it will substantially prevent water from getting in between the same and the glass. The device is preferably constructed of galvanized sheet steel or may be constructed of some non-corrosive material, such as brass, copper or the like.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is The combination with a sash rabbetcd to form vertically and horizontally disposed walls, of a pane of glass seated against the said walls, and a fastening device adapted to hold the glass against said walls, said fastening device comprising a blank of sheet metal bent upon itself at its intermediate transverse portion to form substantially parallel members of equal length and of a height equal to the height of said vertical wall, prongs disposed on the edge of said parallel members throughout their entire length, the prongs carried by one of said members engaging the horizontal wall of the rabbeted portion of said sash and securing the fastening device in spaced upright parallel relation from the vertical wall of the rabbeted sash portion forming a glass space, the prongs of the other parallel me1nher being bent in a horizontal plane to the said horizontal wall and lying flush against said horizontal wall throughout the entire width of said glass space, and thesaid prongs engaging the lower portion of the said vertical walls, the said pane when in applied position contacting with a vertical and horizontal portion of said fastening device and the vertical wall of said rabbeted portion.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES W. SEGO.
