SASH-HOLDER.
SPECPICATIO forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,560, dated October 18, 1887,
Application tiled October 13, 1886. Serial No.2l6,164. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, z'z may concern:
Be it known that I, Isaac B. EDINGTON, of Vaterloo, in the county of Seneca and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Vindow-Fastener, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which* Figure 1 is a front elevation of a window 1c with my improved fastener applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on line xm in Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on line y y in Fig. l.
Similar' letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient windowfastener for holding the window-sash in any desired position by friction.
My invention consists in the combination, with the window frame and stop, of a rightangled arm having a lip extending partly over the inner face of the stop, and a screw for clamping the arm tightly against the stop, all as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
At the side of the window A a plate, B, provided with 4a screw-threaded stud, a, is secured to the inner face of the window-frame C, and upon the stud a is placed a nut, b, capable of being turned by the fingers.
A right-angled arm, D, provided with an aperture for receiving the stud a, is placed between the nut b and the plate B, and its angled end c extends along the inner side of the window-casing and rests upon the windowstop d. The arm c is provided with a lip, e, which extends partly over the inner face of the window-stop. The window-stop d need not be fastened by nails or screws to the casing above and below the arrn D, as the lip e of the angle-plate will retain said stop in properposition against the window-frame; but the outer strip or stop, d, is permanently secured to the window-frame. When the nut b is turned down upon the arm D, the said arm 1s forced against the stop d with sufficient pressure to cause the stop to press against the lower Windowsash and the latter against the upper sash, and the upper sash against 5 the outer stop, d2, and hold said sashes in any desired position.
By means of my improvement the windowsash may be tightened to prevent the entrance of wind and dust and exclude cold, and the two sashes can be retained clamped together and in close contact by the same fastener.
It is obvious that instead of employing a screw-threaded stud, a, and nut b, I may forrn a screwthreaded hole in the plate B and insert a screw in the arm D, which is capable of engaging the said screw-threaded hole.
My improvement may be applied to one or both sides of a window, as may be required.
I ain aware that the sash of a window has been held at any desired position by the bead or stop being pressed against it by a cam,and
I am also aware that the two sashes of a window have been pressed against the parting- 7o strip by means of a bar having one end bent inward and the other end bent outward, and
a set-screw passing through the outer bent end and bearing against a plate in the frame or casing, and I therefore do not claim such inventions. By my construction the bead or stop will not only be pressed against the sash to hold it in any desired position, but it will also be retained against lateral displace` ment and pressed against the casing, so as to make a tight joint and thereby exclude the cold.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 85 1. A window-fastener consisting ofthe plate B, provided with the screw-threaded stud a, the nut b thereon, and the right-angled arm D, placed loosely upon said stud and provided with the lip c on the angled end c, in combination with a window-frame, two sashes in frictional Contact against each other, an outer bead or stop permanently secured to the window-frame, and an inner bead or stop standing unfastened against said window-frame, but retained against lateral displacement by the lip e of the fastener, substantially as dewhereby the bead or stop of a window is rescribed. f' tained against lateral displacement, substan- 2. A window-fastener consisting ofthe plate tially as and for the purpose described.
B, provided with the screw-threaded stud a, l
5 the nut b thereon7 and the right-angled arm D, placed loosely upon said stud and provided with the lip e on the angled end c,
