ORGHARD HEATER AND VAPORIZER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL WV. JOHNSON, acitizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Orchard- Heaters and Vaporizers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in orchard heaters and Vaporizers, the objects of which are to provide a simple, substantial and durable device of this class, which shall be extremely cheap in cost of manufacture, be adapted to have crude oil burned therein with an unfluctuating flame, whether said device be filled or almost empty of oil; to have water vaporized by the heat generated in said device, and thereby provide a medium for carrying heat and matter for enveloping an orchard, for preventing the damaging action of frost.
Further objects are to so construct the device that a more perfect combustion of fuel may be had than is usual in other devices of this class, and to provide safe and simple means, whereby said combustion may be regulated; also to so construct and arrange the parts of the device that fire will not at all be liable to be communicated therefrom to adjacent objects.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section on the line X X seen in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top plan. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the wick float and the parts carried thereby. Fig. 4 is a top plan of the oil holder.
The oil holder 1 holds oil 1 therein. Said holder is preferably stamped of sheet metal and has draft openings 1 formed through the upper edge portion thereof, for
admission of air. On said upper edge rests drum 2, having enlarged lower portion 2 formed therewith, in which latter is formed the damper openings 2", adapted to be rotated into and out of register with openings 1", for regulating admission of air. lVater pot 3 is preferably formed of stamped sheet metal and holds water 3. Said pot has radially formed projections 3' formed with the upper edge thereof. Said project-ions rest on the upper edge of drum 2 and hold said pot in place therein. which form exits for egress of heated air. Drum 2 is provided with projections 5 which may either be secured thereon or be formed of the sheet metal of which said drum is made. v
Referring to Fig. 1, rotatably mounted on the enlarged portion 2 of drum 2 is the annular wind shield 4, adapted to shield openings 1 from wind. Said shield has notches 1 formed in its upper inner edge, adapted to be lifted into engagement with projections 5 for rotating drum 2 and thereby regulating admission of air as previously mentioned. Shield 4 is also rotated while resting on portion 2 until said notches are moved from beneath projections 5 after which the upper inner edge of said shield is lifted against the lower ends of said projections, thereby lifting drum 2 for removal of same from holder 1. Wick float 6 has an open bottom to allow part of the air therein, to escape therefrom when the same is eX- panded by heat. Said float is provided with float guides 6, secured thereto and extended across the open bottom thereof. Said guides have return bent portions forming lower float guides 6 guided by the inner surface of oil holder 1, and also other re turn bent portions which form upper float guides 6 guided in drum 2. Said guides keep wick float 6 in upright position in oil holder 1. Said float is provided with the detachable perforated ring 7 for holding Wick 8 in place thereon, thus providing wick carrying means, by the use of which the upper edge of wick 8 is at all times kept at one certain distance above the surface of oil 1 for insuring an unfluctuating flame on said wick. Wick 8 is preferably made of asbestos, while the oil holder 1 and water pot 3 are formed without seam.
In operation a plurality of the described heaters are placed on the ground at the weather side of an orchard, at such points as desired, for warming the same. The fuel is ignited and the draft is regulated as described. Should the surface of the oil become ignited the same would not be damaging to the device in any way, and could easily be controlled by the described draft regulating means.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and original and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An oil holder, adapted to hold burning oil therein, said holder having air inlet openings formed through the upper edge portion thereof; a drum mounted on said holder said drum having an. enlarged lower end portion formed therewith and a plurality of projections on the outer surface thereof, said enlarged portion being adapted to cover said air inlet openinp's and, having damper openings formed through the lower edge portion thereof; an annular wind shield adapted to shield said air inlet openings from wind said shield being rotatably mounted on said enlarged portion of said drum and having a plurality of notches formed in the inner upper edge thereof, said notches being adapted to be lifted into engagement with said drinn projections for rotating said drain; a water pot provided with a plurality of supporting projections extended. radially from the upper edge thereof with open spaces between them for egress of heated air therethrough the outer ends of said projections resting on the upper edge of said drum for supporting and holding said water pot in. said drnni; a wick in said oil holder, and supporting means for supporting said wiek.
2. In an orchard heater and vaporizer, an oil holder having; air inlet openings formed through the upper edge portion thereof; a drain mounted on said holder said druni being provided. with an enlarged lower end v portion adapted to cover said air inlet openings, said lower portion having damper openings formed through the lower edge thereof; an annular wind shield rotatably mounted on said. enlarged portion of said drum for shielding said air inlet openings from wind and dise-ngageable engaging means on said drum and shield whereby the same are (.lisengageably engagedifor rotating); said druni when said shield is rotated.
In an orchard heate and vaporizer, an oil holder; a drum rotatably mounted on said holder; a wick float in said oil holder, said wick float being formed with an open bottom and being provided with wick holding means adapted to hold a wick thereon; float guides extended across the open bottom of said float and seeured to the lower edge thereof, said guides being extended upward therefrom and having lower guides formed thereon guided in said oil holde and upper guides formed on the upper ends of said float guides the latter guides being guided in said drain and air inlet means for said oil holder.
