SHOW-CASE.
To 03] whomii may concern it known that I, THo'MAs E. Lmnsar,
*a .citiz en.o the United States, and a resiidentpf Jackson, in the county or Madison and State of Tennessee, have" invented a tion. The objectof the invention is to provide a; new. and improved show-case for use in stores and other places, and arran ed to properl display and store cigars an other comma ities or articles, and to permit the person in charge of the, shoW-caseto swing the glass front into an ope osit-ion for giving access to the articles wit a view to allow the customer to make the desired selection without requiring disturbing of "the articles by the person in charge.
For the purposementioned use is made of a casing containing a series of fixed shelves for displaying articles, and arranged in step form, a glass 'front mounted to swing up and down on the casin to give access to the displayed articles, an manually-controlled means for swinging the lass front upward into closed position and ownward into open in forming a art of this specification, in w ich similar 0 aracters of reference indi- .ca'te corresponding parts in all the x iews.
' Figure 1 is a perspective view of the show-case; Fig. 2 1s areal elevation of the same with one of the doorsopen; and Fig. 3
1 is an enlar ed transverse section of the sameon the inc 3 3 of Fig. 2.
' A casing A of suitables ze and material is provide in its up or front portion with an openin B ada to to be closed oropened preferabliy; of segmental .bg a glass front s a secured on a pe, and attached to arms longitudinall -extending shaft E journaled in ,t e ends 0 the casin A; On the shaft E is secured a gear whee F in mesh with a se mental a racket G held. on the back A of the casin A, and on the said'segmental gear whee G is secured or formed a. handle H extending rearwardly through a slot A formed in the back A of the casin A, as plainl shown in Fig. 2. The hand e H is provi ed with a locking lever I ada ted to engage a notched segment I fastene to the back A of the casing A so that the handle :pcification 01 Letters hen. - othe played, and in the rear of the said-shelves gear wheel G fulcrumed at G on' Patented Apr. 16, 1912.
When the lever I is pressed by theoperator and swung out of .enga ement with the notchedsegment I then t e handle H can 60 be moved up or .down by the person in charge of the show-case so as to cause a turning'of the segmental gear wheel G and a like turning of the gear wheel F to swing the glass front 0 up into a closed position 5 or, down into an open position, as will be readily understood by reference to the full and dotted lines in Fig. 3. When the glass front G is in a closed or an 0 en position,
the operator manipulates the ever I so as 7 tion A of the casingaA is so arranged relao tive to the segmen 1 glass front C that when the latter is swung downward it gasses within the casing A in the rear of the xed front portion A,
In the upper portlon of the casing are 35 arranged a series of shelves K, preferably arranged in step form, for conveniently supporting cigar boxes L in open position, or
merchandise or articles to be dis- K are arranged compartments N for storing stock, access to which is had through doors ()"arranged on t-he back A. of the casin A.
The shelves K as well as the bottoms o the com artments N are preferably perforated,
as p ainly indicated in Fig. 3,. to emit ventilation and moisture to pass t rough the. said compartments with a view to keep the cigars in proper moist condition. The moisture is supplied to the interior of the casing A by the use of a moisture pan P, removably held in the bottom of the casing A, the pan P being preferably provided at the rear end withknobs P for' withdrawin the pan P through an opening A arrang A of the casing. Thus t-he pan P can be removed for filling the same with water and then replaced through the o ening A. The top of'the casing A is pre erably provided with a glass panel Q, to permit the attendant 110 l in charge of the show-case to conveniently view the goods displayed on the shelves K.
Hcan be looked in anydesired position. I
A. so as to normallyliold 75 in theback It is understood that by arrangin the; shelves vK in step form, ci ar boxes 1 can" be readily dis layed with t eir covers open and. without t e covers of the cigar boxes on= one shelf interfering with the cigar boxes on the next shelf above.
Having thus described my invention, I
' claim as new and desire to secure by Letters closed position, a
Patent:
1. A show-case, comprising a casing having an opening in its up er front portion and a vertical slot in the ack, asegmental toothed rack secured upright along said slot a glass front for opening or closing the sai opening, a shaft journaled in the casing and provided with arms carrying the said glass ront, a springconnected with the said arms and normally olding said front in its up er manplally 7 control ed handle extending through 1: 'e said slot gear wheels in mesh with each other and one forming part-of the said handle, the other being attached to the said shaft, a laterally swinging pawl pivoted on one side of said handle and ada ted to engage said rack,
shelves arrange in step form within the upper portion of the said casing, and storage compartments within the said casing in the rear of the saidshelves.
2. A show case comprising a casing having a lower section, and an upper section provided with a front opening, said casing also having doors in the rear thereof leading to both sections and a rear vertical slot, a segmental toothed rack secured upright along of said front wa said slot, a support arranged vertically withhaving rearwardly inclined upper and lower portions in the respective casin sections, and a series of super osed shelves n the rear 1, orming storage s aces, said upper portion of said support-We 1 bein in stepped form, a segmental front norma 1y closing the opening in the uppercasing section, a shaft journaled through the casing and the said inner support and proin the'casing and comprising a front wall vided with arms carrying the saidsegmental front whereby the latter may swing downwardly into the space between the casin front and the lower portion of the sai front wall ofsaid inner support, a spring connected with the said arms and normally holding said segmental front in its u per closed position, a manually controlled andle extending through the said slot, gear wheels in mesh with one another and one forming part of the said handle, the other of said ear wheels bein attached to the said sha t, and-a lateralEy swingin pawl pivoted on one side of said han e and adapted to engage the said rack whereby the said segmental front may be lockedvin its lower open position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subsoribin witnesses.
