Serial N0. 596,112.
T0 all whom z't may concewz Be it known that I, FRANK I-IUFF, a citizen 0f the United States, residing at N apa, in the county of Napa and State 0f Ca1ifornia, have invented certain neW and useful Improvements in Electric Damper Controls, 0f which the following is a specificafion, reference being had t0 the accompanying drawings.
This invention is an improved e1ectric damper contr01 f01 use in incubators und consists in the construction, combination and arrangement 01: devices, hereinafter described and c1aimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figu1e 1 is a side elevation 0f an e1ectric damper control construcfed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2isaplan 0f the same. Fig. 3 is a detail transverse sectional view 0f the same 011 the plane indicaced by the line aa of Fig. 1.
In accordance with my invention, I provide a base 1 which is preferably made 0f wrought iron, which is 0'E suitable size and shape, and which is provided at 0ne sicle with a laterallyextending arm 2 at the outer end of which is a vertical standard 3, the
base, the said arm and the said standard being here shown as 1ntegral. T0 the center of the base 1s secured, as by means of a screw 4, the lower end 0f the core 5 of an elecrrornagnet 6, the windings of which am indicated at 7, and the heads at 8, 9. The upper head 9 is provided with a binding post 10 to which an electric conducting wire may be connected, the other terminal 0f the windings being indicated at 11, anc1 engaged by a screw 12 which is also employed to secure the base 0n a suitable support. A horizontally disposed bracket 13, which comprises arms 14, 15, arranged at right angles to each other, has its said arm 141, secnred t0 the inner side 0f the standard 3, as at 16, so that the arm 15 is disposed above and ab right angles to the base. The said arm 15 is provided 0n its upper side with a pair 01 lugs 17 appropriately spaced apart, and provided with alining openings.
A balancing bearn 18 which is preferably made of sheet brass is provided 0n its nn" der side at a suitable point with a Ing 19 which enters the space between the 1ngs 17 and is pivoted thereto by means of a pin 20, which passes through alining openings in said 1ugs 17, 19. The said balancing beam is provided at one end with an arm 21 on which is fitfed a weight 22 which is slidable ihereon, the said woight having an opening through which the said arm extends, and the said weight is pr0vided with a set sc1ew 28 whereby it may be secured t0 the said arm at any desired adjustment. On the under side of the balancing beam, at a point immediately above the upper p0le of fhe core 5, is an armature 25 Whi0h is secured t0 the balancing beam, as by means 0f screws 25. The balancing beam at the end opposite the arm 21 thereof is bent 0n opposite sides to f0rm a tubular socket 26 which is open 011 its upper side as at 27, an extension arm 28 which may in practice be a piece of wire 01? suitable gage, o1 brass 01 aluminum having its inner end fitted in the saicl socket, and hence sccured t0 the balancing bea1n and forming a part thereof. A damper 29 here shown as a sheet meta1 disk f0r regulating the draft 015 a lamp 0r other heating device f01 heating an incubator is suspended from the extension arm 28 by means 0f a ]ink 30, the said link having a 1100k 31 at its lower end which engages an eye 32 0n the center of the said damper.
Assnming that the device has been properly adjusted it Will be underst0od that the damper disk by gravity Will be. normally he1d at a suitable poinf, and that the same Will act upon the balancing bea1n to cause the latter t0 space the armatnre from the p01e of the electro-magnet. In practice a suitab1e thermostafically operating electric circuit close1 Will be used t0 control the ein cnit including the windings 01:' the electromagnet and when the said circnit is closed. the electromagnet will bec0me 0xcited and by acting upon fhe armature will cause the latter t0 partly turn the balancing beam on irs pivot and hence causo the balancing beam t0 raise ehe damper disk. As soon as the desired change in temperat-ure has taken p1ace, the circuit by the action of ihe thermostatically operating circuit closer will be opened, and hence the damper disk by gravity will reassume its normal p0siti0n, so that the operation of the device is antornatic.
I claim:
The herein described electric damper c0nrrolling mechanism embodying a base having a vertical standard rising therefrom at 0ne side, an electromagnet having the 10wer end of its core secured 011 the base, a horizontally disposed bracket comprising a pair 0f arms arranged at right angles to each other, one arm 0f the said bracket being searm 0f the balancing beam und a shiftable 10 cured t0 the upper end 0f the standard and Weight carried by the other.
the oher arm thereof being disposed ab 011e In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my side 0f the electromagnet, a balancing beam signature in the presence 0f two Winesses. pivotally mounted 0n the last ment-ioned arm of the bracket, said balancing beam be- FRANK HUFF. ing provided with an armature und. also \Vitnessesz with a pair of oppositely extending arms, a T. N. MOUNT,
damper device suspended and carried by one ELIZABETH GRIGSBY.
