Patented June 11, 1935 UNITED STATE This invention relates to improvements in furnace regulators the character of which is similarinsome respects to that set forth in Letters Patent No. 1,698,551, issued to me'January '5 8, 1929. The object of the present invention is to provide a simplified construction for automatic operation of the draft andcheckdampers of a heating furnace controlled by a thermostat,
, and also to afford means for adjusting the apparatus from a point remote from the furnace.
A further object is to provide a simple means operated by the fuel door and associated with the damper controlling means so arranged as to cause the dampers to close when the fuel door is opened. Other :objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
' An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:-- r v Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the head portion of a thermostat and its 'complemental operable parts, several portions thereof being cut away;

The illustrative embodiment of the invention consists of a head lrfrom which extendsa beam 2 constituting an expansion member and in which is longitudinally disposed a rod 3 that is definitely secured at one end in the tail of the beam by means of an anchor pin 4. The beam is formed of metal of greater expansible properties than that of the rod so that as the temperature of the beam and rod fluctuates more or less movement of. the forward end of the rod 3 relative to the head 1 takes place.
'An actuating arm 5 is secured in the head I on a transversely disposed pin 6, and the forward end of the rod 3 is secured in the hub of the arm 5 by means of a transversely disposed pin 1 located at a point spaced below the pin 6 on which the arm is mounted. Thus, the arm is caused to swing upwardly or downwardly dependent upon the fall or rise in temperature of and unequal contraction or expansion of the beam 2 and its contained rod 3. The actuating arm has at its outer end a pulley block 8 having mounted therein upon a transversely disposed pin 9 a pair of sheaves l0 and Il hereinafter referred to.
In the head I is pivotally supported upon alined pins 12 a rock frame l3 having a vertically disposed opening M through which the arm 5 extends and has free vertical movement. In the upper end of the frame I2 is mounted upon a transversely disposed pin I5 apair of sheaves l6 and H, and a pair ofcorresponding openings l-8 are made in said frame through which access is'had to said sheaves. The furnace to which the invention is-applicable has a fire door 22-through which fuel is.
supplied; a draft damper 23'for admission of air necessary for combustion of the fuel supplied v 1 check damper 25 by means of a chain or cable J 26-26' that is strung from the draft damper over the sheave ll on the arm 5, from thence. under thesheave I6 in the frame 13, ove'ran adjusting drum 21, and from thence under the sheaves I! and I0, and then over suspended pulleys 28 and 29 to the'check damper 25. The cable 26-26 is of such limited length that when the apparatus is in normal operating position upon travel of the cable the draft and check dampers are actuated so that when one is open the other is closed, and vice versa according to the direction of travel. When the frame i3 is in normal operating position, as shown in Fig. 1:, by
adjustably turning the drum 2'! in one direction or the other the cable 26-28 is moved so that the draft and check dampers are accordingly adjusted.
The drum 2! is of any suitable construction and is conveniently supported upon the floor 30 above the furnace, or at a more remote location in the building to suit the convenience of the "op erator in making adjustments without necessity of attending the furnace.

The upper end of the rock frame l3 has at tached thereto at one side thereof, by means of a screw 3|, another cable 32 that extends pend ently, passes through a pulley 33 =secured'-to the furnace at a point thereon adjacent the hinged side of the fire door 22, and is connected with the latch 34 on the fire door. By this means when the fire door is closed the rock frame is held down sirable especially when fuel is supplied to the furnace as then air is drawn through the fire" door opening into the furnace and out with the product of combustion through the smoke pipe.
When the fire door is again closed the rock frame" is returned to its operating position and the slack of the cable 26-46 is taken up. V
7 Upon firing the furnace the heat generated thereby is imparted to the air in the hot air bone net which is distributed to desired points through pipes 35 connected therewith, and the temperature-of the expansion beam israised more or less accordingly which causes downwardmovementof the actuating .arm 5 and consequent travelof the cable 2626, correspondingly, Thus, the draft damper 23 is permitted to close vwhile the check damper 25 is raised. As the fire in the furnace moderates the temperature of the air and the expansion beam in the bonnet correspondingly falls causing the actuating arm 5 to rise, whereupon the draft damper Z3 is drawn open while the pansion beam posed within the hot air bonnetfof a;furnace having a head disposed exteriorly with I respect to said bonnet, a rodextending longitudinally in said beam composed, of m etalof, less sus-' ceptibility to expansion whenheated than said beam, one end thereof being secured inithejtail end of "said beam, an actuating armqhaving sheaves in one end thereof'and pivotally supported at its opposite end in said head and pive otally connected with said rod, an extension to support said beam in operating position in said bonnet, a rockframe pivotally connected at one end thereof with said head, and having sheaves in its other end alined With thecorresponding sheaves in said arm, an adjusting drum,supported above said furnace, a cable engaging said sheaves connected at one end'to the draft damper of the furnace, and at its opposite end with the check damper therefor, said cable being opera tively related with said actuating arm, rock frame and adjusting drum, and another'cable operatively connecting the fire door of the furnace with said rock frame disposed to hold the rock frame in operative position when said door is closed;
