SHINGLE-MOLD.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR M. WVAL'roN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ShinglelWIolds; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to shingle molds and more particularly to a device of that character for use in molding shingles of cement or other plastic material directly upon the roof or other place where they are to be used.
It is the object of my invention to provide a shingle mold which may be extended to a desired length, and comprises a base portion and separate arms adapted for adjustment on the base portion and for removal therefrom, either before or after the application of the base to the roof boards. In accomplishing this object I have provided the improved details of structure hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I is a perspective view of a roof provided with shingles formed with my im proved molds. Fig. II is a similar View of a partially shingled roof, showing the manner of using the molds. Fig. III is a perspective view of one base section and one of the arms of a mold constructed according to my invention. Fig. IV is a cross section on the line IV-IV, Fig. I. Fig. V is a longitudinal section through the joint of abutting base sections. Fig. VI is a front perspective view of one of the base sections and an arm. Fig. VII is a perspective view of a modified form of base and arm. Fig. VIII is a perspective View of another modified form of same.
Referring more in detail to the parts 1 designates one of the base sections, which is preferably formed of sheet metal and comprises a flat body 2, having an upturned flange 3 at its forward edge; said flange 3 being provided with a back turned lip 4. which depends at the rear of the flange and is spaced therefrom to provide the recess 5. so that the upper edge of said flange is unobstructed at both ends.
At one end of the base body is a slot 6. At the inner edge of the slot, the material of the body is raised to form a cap 7 Through the opposite end of the base body is a tongue 8, having a raised part 9 and an end lip 10. At the tongue end of the base section, the flange 3 is extended beyond the body 2, so that it may abut against the flange of an adjoining section when two sections are united. The tongue of one of the base sections is adapted to cooperate with the slot and cap of an adjoining section to form a continuous base member when the parts are brought together, as will presently be described.
11 designates a mold arm which comprises a head part 12 having a front flange 13, and a base part 14 adapted to bear against the back of the lip 4 and having an'upwardly curved hooked part 15 for projection into the slot 5 between the base flange 3 and its lip 4. Integral with the head 11 is the arm extension 16, the bottom of which is adapted to extend in the plane of the base body 2, while the top tapers gradually toward the end of the extension; the material being turned downwardly at the end and pointed to form an anchoring member 17.
In using my improved mold, a number of the base sections are arranged end to end with the tongue lips 10, of one section, fitted beneath the raised cap 7 of the adjoining section, with the raised part of the tongues over-lying a part of the body of the adjusted base section and the extensions of the front flanges abutting to form a continuous back for the shingle spaces. With the base sections in place the arms are applied thereto by placing the heads 11 over the unlipped parts of the flanges 3 and moving same along the flanges, so that the hooked parts 15 may take under the lips 4; the friction between the parts being sufficient to hold the heads in place when properly located. When the arms have been arranged in the proper positions, the anchor points may be driven into the roof boards to hold the arms in place and prevent their being thrown out of adjustment while material is being poured and troweled.
It is apparent that with a mold of this construction, the plastic material may be placed between the extension arms and when troweled will form a shingle having a thick butt and thin upper end, so that the tiers of shingles may be overlapped in the usual manner.
The modifications shown in Figs. VII and VIII show the lips 4 and 4', as being secured to the top of the-base body 2 and as extended from the rear edge of said body, and the back lip of the arm head as being extended so that the hooked part 15-15 may cooperate with the base lips. It is ap parent, however, that in the modified forms, the arms are applied in the same manner as the preferred form and that the devices are used in the same way.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is 1. A shingle mold comprising a base part having an upturned flange and a lip, and an arm having a body adapted for sliding on the front face of said flange, and a hooked part adapted for projection under said lip, for the purpose set forth.
2. A shingle mold comprising a base part having an upturned flange and a back turned lip; and an arm having a head adapted for sliding adjustment on the flange; said head having a flange adapted for engagement with the front face of the base flange, and a body portion adapted for extension over said lip and having a hooked part adapted for sliding travel under the lip, substantially as set forth.
3. A shingle mold comprising a base portion having a flat body provided with an upwardly turned flange at its front edge,
said flange having a backwardly and downwardly turned lip thereon, the downturned part of said lip being spaced from the flange to form a recess therebetween, and an arm having a head provided with a front flange adapted to slide on the front face of said base flange and with a downwardly turned body having an upturned hooked part adapted for cooperation with the base flange and lip, substantially as set forth.
4:. A shingle mold comprising a base having a body portion and an upturned flange at one edge, a lip on the upper edge of and set in from the ends of said flange, said lip having a downturned part spaced from the face of the flange to provide a recess therebetween, and an arm comprising a head having a front part adapted to slide on the front face of the base flange and having a back wardly spaced body provided with an upturned hooked part, said body being adapted to slide on the back face of the base lip and the hooked part to travel in the space between the base flange and lip.
5. A shingle mold comprising a base section, having a transverse slot at one end, and a cap struck up from the base at the inner side of the slot; a tongue projecting from the opposite end of said base section and having a raised part; and a lip at the outer end of said raised part, extending in the plane of the base section, said lip being adapted for projection into the cap of an adjacent section, and the raised part to lie on the portion of said section at the outer side of said slot; said body having a flange at one edge projected beyond the tongued end of said base; and an arm adjustably mounted on said base, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
