Patented Jan. 36, 193%.
To all wit-0m it may concern: I
Be it known that l, ALoNzo BUTTMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand View, in the county of Louisa and State of lowa, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Artificial- Tooth Plates; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in plates for artificial teeth and particularly to lower jaw plates.
One object of the invention is to provide a plate of this character having an improved means for holding the same firmly in place in the mouth without discomfort.
With this and-other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination. and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In. the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lower plate embodying my invention; Fig. 2. is a plan view thereof; Fig. 3'is a rear view of the same; Fig. d is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes my improved lower jaw plate, said plate comprising the gum-engaging channel 2 having in its upper edge the artificial teeth 3. These parts may be formed of the usual or any suitable material, and constructed in any suitable manner. The inner side of the gum-engaging channel extends down into the lower portion of the mouth and to the lower edge of said inner side is secured a soft flexible plate 4 formed of rubber or similar composition and having therein a central \l-shaped notch 5.
The soft rubber plate 4: may be secured to the tooth plate 1 in any suitable manner but is preferably secured by forming a groove or recess 6 in the lower edge of the inner side of the plate 3. into which is closely fitted and cemented the outer edge of the soft rubber plate as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 1 of the drawing.
When in proper position the plate 4 will engage the bottom of the mouth and lie beneath. the tongue, the latter thus serving to firmly hold the plate in position on the lower gums, but permitting the plate to be removed when desired.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1, A dental plate for the lower jaw comprising a channel-shaped, curved portion to cover the gum, and a soft flexible rubber plate secured to the inner edge thereof and forming the whole interior portion or main body of the plate. A
2. A plate for artificial lower jaw teeth, comprising a channel shaped gum-engaging portion adapted to be engaged with the lower gums, said gum-engaging portion having formed in the edge of its inner side a groove, a soft, flexible, plate having its inner edge fittedand secured in said groove, said soft plate decreasing in thickness toward its outer edge and having formed therein a centrally disposed substantially V-shaped notch.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALONZO C. BUTTMAN.
