Be it known that I, ANDREW J. YViLsoN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of'OhiO, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which ,I hereby declare the following to be a. full,
clear, and exactdescription, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains, to make and use the same.
The objects of the invention are to provide a toy catapult for sharply propelling small articles such as peas or shot and ofsuch simplicity of construction that it'can readily be used by the youngest child.
The device is provided with a handle portion with an elastic portion and arigid abutment against which the propelling portion is adapted to strike sharply and thereby pro- ,vide the reaction necessary to give additional impetus to the missile.
The invention is'heremafter further described, shown in the accompanying draw ings and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Fi irel is a side elevation of the device. whic shows in dotted lines the position in which. the elastic member is pulled back before liberating it to throw the missile; Fig.2 is a front elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 is a plan view looking from above; Fig. 4 is a side elevas tion of a modified form showing a separate spring member.
' In these views A is a preferably cylindrical rod iormed of elastic material such as wood in which the grain is very straight and which is possessed of great strength and elasticity; such wood may be .oak, hickory, ash, cypress, spruce or any one of the number of other varieties which are well qualified for use in this manner. This rod forms a rigid handle and is provided with a long tudinal saw kerf B located at one side of the axial center so as to provide an elastic proelling member C which is thus made integral with the handle portion. The handle portion is cut away at the upper end so as to leave a substantial length I) of the ropcllingniember projecting beyond it. n-
trally upon this progecting end of the prd- 'pelling member is aflixed a shallow cup E adapted to hold temporarily the ball or other missile to be discharged from the catapult. The extremity F of the handle forms an abutment against which the propelling member strikes.
The propelling member is preferably wider at the bottom than at the outer edge-to give it increased strength and durability and to obtain this result the saw kerf can be made slightly inclined tothe axis of the rod or the base of the handle can be made broader in the outer end.
The action of the device is very pronounced and may be described as follows:
When the outer end of the propelling member is pulled back as shown in dotted lines in.Fig.' l, and the ball placed in the cup and the propelling member is released it will spring back to the vertical position and strike sharply against the abutment F of the p The reaction occurring .from the handle;

Having described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1S- 1. As an article or manufacture, a toy catapult, comprising, a handle composed of a hard elastic material such as wood, said handle provided with a longitudinal saw kerf being kerf near one edge, said saw dia onal to the side of said handle, the de tac ed portion slanting upward and vided with a narrow extremity cup centrally secured to said projecting portion.
