GEORGE FISCHRUPP, 01E CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FOLDING BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 28, 1911.
Patented Dec. 19, 1911. Serial No. 623,923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonon FISCIIHUPP, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the controlling connections by which the proper folding and unfolding movements are imposed upon the longitudinally hinged bed forming sections, such as form the subject matter of my prior application for Letters Patent Serial No. 532,791, filed December 13, 1909, and has for its object to provide a simple and effective prop mechanism for automatically locking the hinged cover of the bed housing in an open condition, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a transverse sectional elevation of the present bed structure in a closed condition. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the parts in an open condition.
Similar reference numerals indicate like parts in both views.
As represented in the drawings the general arrangement of the parts are substantially identical with the construction shown and claimed in my aforesaidapplication for Letters Patent Serial No. 532,791, and in volves a structural arrangement of parts as follows: 1 represents the box or housing within which the folding bed sections are arranged, and 2 the hinged cover or top of the same. 3 is a longitudinal rail pivoted to the end walls of the box 1 and provided with upright brackets 4 for the attachment of the intermediate links of the folding bed sections hereinafter described. 5 are the illtermediate links above referred to, and which are of the T form shown, and pivoted by their lateral arms 6 to the upper ends of the rail brackets 1 aforesaid. 7 is the upper and S the lower member of two counterpart skeleton bed frames which are pivotally connected to the opposite ends of the intermediate links 5 aforesaid, to constitute a folding skeleton frame to the margins of which is attached the usual elastic wire webbing (not shown) which is ordinarily employed to support the usual mattress. 9 is a lifting lever pivoted intermediate its length to an end bar of the lower frame section 8 aforesaid, and with its lower end having bearing upon the bottom board or rail of the housing 1 and its upper end pivoted to the pull bar 10 now to be described. 10 is a pull bar pivotally attached at one end to the lift ing lever 9, and at the other end to the aforesaid intermediate link 5 at a point adjacent to the point of pivotal attachment of the lower frame section 8 to said link 5. 11 is a radius link pivoted at one end to the end wall of the housing 1 and at its other end to the intermediate link 0, and adapted in an unfoldin movement of the bed frame members to draw the intermediate link from the vertical position shown in Fig. 1, into the horizontal position shown in Fig. 2.
The construction and combination above described, as well as its operation is the same as in my former application Serial No. 532,7 91. i
The novelty of the present improvement involves the combination with a folding bed structure of the typo above described, of provision in connection with the rising and falling frame sections thereof of the following parts: 12 is a diagonal bar fixedly cured to the lower frame section 8 near its inner and free end by rivets and brace 13 as shown. In the opening and upward movement of the bed sections, the said diagonal bar 12, is adapted to brace against the opened cover 2, to hold the same in said condition while the bed sections are in their unfolded condition for use as a bed.
Having thus fully described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a folding bed, the combination of a housing, a hinged cover for said housing, a folding sectional bed frame adapted to fold into said housing and having a rising movement as it unfolds, and a prop bar fixed on the lower section of said bed frame and adapted to engage and hold the cover in an GEORGE FIS OHRUPP.
